bad power steering pump

so when my brother had my car before i bought it, he didnt know you were supposed to used trans fluid in the ps, till after he sold me the car. He had a leak in one of the hoses so constantly had to top it off, useing ps fluid. now, the pump whines all the time, and steerings a bit tight. will a flush and fill with trans fluid fix this, or is my pump on its way out?

the pearlie at the picknpull i found has one still, and it costs 45 dollars, with a 30 day warranty for exchange or store credit. to risky? should i pick that one up?

*edit, i somehow posted in the wrong area, i thought i was in tech Q&A, mods please help and move me to the correct location?*

Re: bad power steering pump

I will move it.

You could get that other pump for a spare in case this doen't work. I would do the O-ring fix on the holding tank and that should fix it. See the directions in the How-To Docs. I would then add the proper fluid and run it for a couple of days and then empty the tank again and add fresh fluid again. After a couple of time of this, it should replace the bulk of it. Good luck.

If it whines all of the time more than likely the back half of the pump has been ruined at this point. I would suggest getting the u-pull pump and replacing the output pipe o-rings and the reservoir o-ring as Earl suggested.

make sure the leak is fixed.

Re: bad power steering pump

Re: bad power steering pump

I would suggest flushing the entire system and replacing with new ATF. This can be done by removing the rubber return line from the pump side and putting it into a bucket. Add new, clean fluid until thats all that comes out into your bucket. This will avoid any further damage to your steering system.
