Re: anyone that owns a prius or other (recalled toyotas )

They just build what people want. And the new corolla isn't that different from the old one..except it is because it got a new engine this time...just like it did in 1998 when they came out with that one.

Re: anyone that owns a prius or other (recalled toyotas )

I was reading in the local paper that there was a recall of rear axles in about 2004 or etc for certon 1998 models here in NZ
They had to replace about 12,000 I think?
Any way the whole supply in the world was exhausted...
And they are still waiting to replace 4000

Re: anyone that owns a prius or other (recalled toyotas )

The cruise control on my 2010 jetta accelerated beyond my cruise speed once and I just hit the brakes. Their defect rate is still low and most likely lower than detroit's if these defects are even real lol.

Re: anyone that owns a prius or other (recalled toyotas )

All of this business over unintended acceleration in Toyotas reminds me of the trouble Ford had years ago with automatics allegedly dropping into reverse unexpectedly while the car sat at idle. The fix? A letter from Ford including a decal to affix to the dash, instructing the driver to always be sure the car is fully in "P" and set the parking brake when idling. Wish I still had mine.

Truth is, my '68 Mustang needed to roll a few inches one way or another to engage the park pawl, and I always instructed anyone servicing my car (often with a written warning) to be SURE the car was fully in park before jacking or lifting. (The parking brake on that thing never was worth a flip.) Once it took off down my driveway in reverse as I was giving my wife's car a jump start. Fortunately I caught it before it made it to the street.

Re: anyone that owns a prius or other (recalled toyotas )

Lol I just heard the other day from our Toyota rep, that the guy in California with the Prius who's "accelerator stuck" and the cop had to slow him down? (Sure you saw it on the news..) Turns out he was 4 months behind on his payments and had filed for bankruptcy!

Re: anyone that owns a prius or other (recalled toyotas )

I figured someone was bound to take advantage of this situation. My girlfriend drives a prius and we have never had a problem with it.

As for putting it in neutral, you have to engage the brake pedal to move the car to neutral, which is done with an electrical selector. There is nothing mechanical about it, and if the brakes are not engaged, no response from selector. And i believe it was said earlier you cannot engage both the throttle and the brake at the same time (but I have tried .) Sometimes you can't help yourself at the pass after a good day of snowboarding. I have actually pulled E-brakes in the thing. It gets around pretty good, haha.

If you can't engage the brake and throttle at the same time--that would be a huge problem if the accelerator got stuck on the floor mat!!!!!!!!! Guess that might be the whole issue?

Re: anyone that owns a prius or other (recalled toyotas )

DStacking floor mats is a bad idea anyways. But the problemoccuring with the potentiometes for the fly-by-wire throttle system is a whole seperate issue.

Maybe I don't understand---BUT if the floormat hangs up the throttle then according to this you are SOL because you cannot apply the brakes to stop????????????? Or am I missing something in your posts?

Re: anyone that owns a prius or other (recalled toyotas )

Even with sticking accelerators, and gear selectors that wont move, and braking that will not work (???)...........

IS THERE AN IGNITION SWITCH THAT CAN'T BE TURNED OFF??

Seriously in my list of stuck gas pedal emergency procedures, turning the key off is right up there with screaming expletives.

Smile Re: anyone that owns a prius or other (recalled toyotas )

I had an '82 Supra P-type that I put nearly 250,000 miles on and to this day I wish I had that one back. Sure it turned into a rust bucket, but that engine, what a sweetheart. The 5 speed stick was great too! Any probs I had with that car were of my own making.

I've had two Solara coupes now and I love them too, never a problem in almost 8 years.

Unintended acceleration? I remember the Audi 5000 problems in the 80,s and if memory serves was finally tracked down to the nut behind the wheel.

Remember that turning off the ignition at road speeds can also be dangerous. You lose power steering and if you turn the steering wheel to far some of them lock.

And of course some people can't think very fast--and in my opinion Prius drivers would be very suspect in this area.

Re: anyone that owns a prius or other (recalled toyotas )

I do not believe the ignition button has any function while the car is in drive. it is not a switch. Just to start the car you have to hold the brake in and press the "power" button. I do not really like the design. But the car has given us no problems. It is great in the snow because of the weight and gets good gas mileage. And it can fit 4 people plus snowboards if the two in the back are friendly.

It is a 2004 and from memory I believe all the suspect cars are newer.
