Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

Been there before. I use one quite a bit at work, so I am definately more than qualified on one. I had a very old one in my toolbox for a while that was made by IR in the 80's. The thing was very high torque, but was a metal handle. I ended up swapping for a plastic one later because when you are cutting steel with one it takes a while, and like you said, it gets very cold.

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

Things have been going very slowly with this lately, but I am back at it and will be ordering the rest of my parts very soon. I am curious what others have done for silicone vacuum hosing. What has been used for ID and OD? Any particular hose people could recommend?

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

Things are picking up now. I have all my parts payed for, and other than the bearings they are either at my house or in the machine shop. Block is being bored and honed, rotating assembly balanced, heads rebuilt with new valve stem seals and a regrind on the seats. I should be starting to re-assemble my engine in a couple weeks so I am pretty anxious. I will be spending A LOT of time in the garage soon. :-) Once everything is running satisfactory and I have a new tranny I will be running it on a dyno and will post results. This will be the second engine to run these pistons. The only other one is dans that I am aware of.

On a side note, I got pulled over on the way to the machine shop...and since I took a deferral just a month ago, I am seriously screwed. Lawyer time...hopefully he can keep it off my record. Wish me luck...

+1 for blue silicone. I have the motorsport warehouse set (highly recommended, great quality), then got a blue crank pulley and blue spt oil cap to match. I like blue

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

Got all my stuff back from the machine shop, it looks sweet and clean. They did a couple things I am not too fond of, but life goes on. Checked the oil clearances today and they are .002" or just a tad tighter

Looks like everything is coming together quite nicely. I have to paint the block and heads, but after that it is just reassembly. Should only be a couple of weeks now if everything goes smoothly. Looks like I know what I am doing this weekend.

I will take pics soon! (get to use the Canon T2i I just bought my girlfriend).

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

Unfortunately today, I was checking my run-out on the crank. I believe at #6 bearing the crank was showing .0015-.0002" of run-out. It was hard to tell because the front bearing (only 1 and 5 were inserted) kept slipping and following the crank out of the cage. Regardless, the needle moved so I am going to be double checking it to verify it is not out of round, and then I will have a few choice words with the machine shop. I do not know if I will take it back to the same guys, after they took .006" of my decks on my block without calling me first.

On the bright side, a few pics!

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

A couple more, in one of them you can see the valve covers (a pretty blue if I say so myself). Keep in mind the block and heads will be black. Wait till all of you see my engine, all the black and blue will be fitting for the bruises it will give to the "kids" in their hondas.

In the last pic is the Left side intake cam. I will be putting the gears back on soon...and pressing forward. Like LAN's build, I will probably end up waiting on the crank

P.S. sorry for the depth of field. The 18x55 mm lens that came with the T2i is good quality but useless with up-close pictures.

How much should they have taken off?

Looking good, glad to see it moving along. How long did the machine shop take to do everything?

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

Took them a couple of weeks, but some of that was waiting on exhaust valves to arrive from subaru.

I have heard .0015" being the norm to take of our decks, but they said they needed to remove the pitting and it took .006". I personally would have rather had a little pitting.

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

So it would seem my crank is not bent. Turns out the journal is out of round. The machine shop said that they cannot fix it unless they do a .010" under-grind on that journal or all of them. I could then run 1 undersize bearing (number 6) or all of them under-grind. But that would risk having the machine shop mess up the oil clearances.

I am hoping I will just be able to run my crank as-is. The tight side of the tolerance is .0013-.0015" and the loose end is .0025". Anyone ever run an out of round crank? I have alread talked to a few people (machine shop included) that think I will be ok. I am not planning on taking the engine above 7500 rpm.

Some input from the engine builders here please?

How many miles did the crank run before, 100K,
and it didn't fail due to that journal?

Cranks generally don't go 'out of round', it was likely machined that way in Japan

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

From what I understand they should not be out of round.

The entire engine (except parts I have replaced) has 187k miles on it. It had no bearing failures.
