ECON Mode

I know that the SVXs have regular and power mode and some of the UK cars have Economy, is it possible to swap in a UK TCU and hook up a switch for that?

How much MPG would you gain in ECON mode?

Re: ECON Mode

I believe the econ mode is only available with the VTD trans. If that's the case, then no it is not possible. I also don't think you'd see a major change in fuel mileage as the stock maps are conservative to make use of the high torque engine.

Phil tested his MPG Normal mode vs. Power mode, and can't measure the difference, so he leaves his JDM cars in Power mode. Econ allows the car to upshift at lower speed than Normal, given the same amount of throttle. If you want to upshift sooner, use very light throttle. Econ has no effect in top gear, the mode only relates to transmission shift programming.

Not entirely true. The German car is not VTD, to my knowledge, and the German car has ECON mode.

Re: ECON Mode

I have looked into the options on foreign markets quite a bit, though my knowledge is old (and therefore, hazy)

I was under the impression that econ mode over their was simply a marketing scheme. That it was the exact same as our power mode, or the power switch (jdm) but in reverse. instead of pressing it for POWER, you were pressing it for NORMAL

No this is not correct, although I used to believe it was simple like this myself.

Phil has got inside the software and mapped all the parameters that are used for each mode. As Need for Speed says most of them control what way the box makes upshifts and down shifts.

The UK box has a number of shift patterns. They are

Power
Normal
Econ
Manual
Cruise.

In addition to these there are map routines that work in emergency, such as the Limp Home mode and the Overheat mode.

The US did not get Econ mode, but trust me, don't pine for it.

It's a lot like sending your car off to the vet to be speyed. An electric wheelchair has more acceleration than the SVX in Econ mode. It really is that bad, you don't want to know. Purely a marketing response to the Oil Crisis at the time. As useful as a chocolate teapot.

Press it for Econ mode, release it for Normal mode.

Phil has remapped TCU code for these cars, press it, Econ light bulb on gets Normal mode, release it, new Normal mode map is reprogrammed to Power mode. How cool is that?

OK, Ya got me Joe. It's actually "Gold Slate Metallic" but somehow all the connotations of actually owning a GOLD Cadillac made me

So, I prefer to call it Champagne or Tan.

Chocolate Teapot indeed!

Cool! My Renault of similar colour that never showed dirt was called Sand Beige Metallic. Suave, or what?

No doubt with you Californians swilling coffee all the time you totally missed my pun.

T Caddy? As in Tea Caddy? As in a canister/container to hold tea leaves for making tea? American equivalent might be the Coffee Jar.

Puns are so wasted, when you have to explain them.....

OK, OK. Being a lifelong Left-Coaster, I guess I could use another popularism; "I was stoned and I missed it".

Sand Beige Metallic sounds like my kind of color!! I always loved the name on my 91 Legacy(Liberty) LS Wagon, with "Misty Dawn Metallic". Gotta love wordsmiths!!
