Grinding/growling in reverse

New today, I was backing up the car and as soon as I press on the gas I get a nasty grinding/growling sound from the front end, and it feels like the car doesn't want to move. Not revving freely, more like the brakes are on.

How much is this going to cost me?

Re: Grinding/growling in reverse

Ya.......

Fortunately I have easy access to a 4.44 trans and rear diff, but I really don't need something like this right now.

Is there a good 4.44 swap how-to? I looked through svxfiles locker and found his parts tools list, but I haven't been able to find a definitive how-to.

Oh, and how much does the swap hurt highway mileage? I'm going for a long-ass drive at the end of August. (like 20 hours one way)

Never a good time

There is a good "how 2" and I will look for it if no one knows where it is. May have it some place

If you click on the link at the bottom of SVXFiles signature you will find a detailed how-to on the swap.

Re: Grinding/growling in reverse

Thanks for the help guys, but I am very happy to report:

FALSE ALARM!!!!

What a relief, it turns out that when I re-did my exhaust, one of the flex pipes I used is a bit too close to the transmission x-member, and when the engine is under load in reverse it twists enough that the pipe touches and makes that scary noise.

I had very bad visions of a horrific trans swap going through my mind.
