Caliper rattle
Hello,
My driver's side brake caliper rattles over small bumps... simliar to what was mentioned towards the bottom of this thread. Could anybody explain further what I should look for/likely the problem? I was considering buying new calipers to fix the problem, but if there's just a bushing, pin, or screw I can replace to fix the problem, I'd rather do that. :-) Thanks, Matt. |

Re: Caliper rattle
either the bolts are lose ( not much chance) or the bearings in the rod that holds the 2 sections together are worn(more than likely).
If that is the case, probably time to replace the caliper. Might check the other side and if not loose, put some high temp grease that is made for the caliper on it. Subaru has a kit with the rubber looking pieces in it, for the front and rear, that is reasonable and will give you some good service if you use some high-temp grease and put it together right. Good luck. Keith |

Re: Caliper rattle
double check that your pads are installed correctly.
the pad wear indicator should be in the lower outside position. if they're installed wrong it will sound like a rattle.

Re: Caliper rattle
They guide the shaft that is a part of the caliper when you apply the brakes. part of the caliper is fastened in place with a couple of bolts and the other part slides back and forth as you use the brakes. the bearings support the rod. When you replace the pads, you swing part of the caliper around and up to get it out of the way. the bearings support that rod that it swings on. As far as I know the bearings are pressed in and not replaceable. However, they should be lubed when replacing the pads and if the rubber protector shields thatare on the shaft are bad, Subaru makes a kit to replace them.
Hope this makes some sense to you! If not, don't feel bad. I read it 3 times and I didn't understand it either. Keith |

Re: Caliper rattle
The rattle is more than likely the worn bushing.
I replaced every part and the only way I got mine to stop was to replace the caliper with a rebuilt. I paid a bit more than this one http://stores.channeladvisor.com/USA...?itemid=331153 but it was worth it. Nice and quiet now

Re: Caliper rattle
Thanks for the explanation. I did not realize that it had bearings. I thought it was only a fixed sleeve.

Re: Caliper rattle
Ummm, has anyone thought that the problem may be due to the brake pad clips or lack there of. Surfer do you have brake pad clips which allow the pads to fit snug into the actual caliper? WHen I did my brake job I neglected to install the pad clips and got a significant amount of rattle.

Re: Caliper rattle
I have the exact same problem, however I neglected to install the clips on either side but only the driver side is making the clunking or rattling noise.
I have not had mine back in the air to take a further look, so I will try to find the bearings, and also tighten everything before getting a new caliper.

Re: Caliper rattle
I have a question: how do you know it's the calipers that are rattling?

Re: Caliper rattle
make sure you still have the rubber boot on the back of your caliper pins. mine was worn off and made a horrid rattle over uneven pavement and small bumps.
