At the risk of being blocked as a 'kill' story. There was an incident that occured about 37 years ago, involving a 69 SS 396 Chevelle and a 49 Dodge 1 ton pickup, with a 'Sonaramic Commando' 361 Chrysler, Purple Shaft cam, Stage 2 heads. It 'remembers'as follows, Chevelle was closing fast, road conditions dictated that the Chevelle drop back to second gear. Chevelle pulled left and started the 'move'. 49 Dodge took right lane. Chevelle hit 3rd gear when the little wisps of smoke came from the tailpipes, Chevelle hit 4th when it happened again. When the Chevelle got to the point that the smoke was happening in 4th, the 'pilot' of the 49 pushed the button that had a 'D' on it. The Chevelle was not seen again.......
Later, the Chevelle jock said that he was doing 135 when the Dodge went away.

Proof that the guys in the little garages could throw something together out of spare parts that could smoke Detroit!!

We built the 49 Dodge to chase parts for the 'race car'.

Another day, I was a witness, when a guy came into Lucas' Amoco and challenged Nick, and the 49 to a 'pinks' race. Nick asked, "what you driving?" Guy pointed to a 64 Vette convertable. Nick said, " NAAA, I don't think so". Guy said, " are you scared?" Nick said, " NO, WTF would I do with a chevrolet????"

The 'race car' was a 63 Dodge, patterned after the 'Ram Chargers' factory race team. It was a 426 wedge, with all the goodies. pushing 1,000 HP.

200 MPH +, I didn't drive it, but I helped build it.

One car that was there that I DID drive was a 69 Hemi Roadrunner. It was a 'sled' compared to the 49, but it felt really GREAT to have had 'access' to such a fine car!

Nick let me drive it because he knew that I wouldn't abuse the privilage. He was right. R.I.P. Nick!!! Thank you for the MENTORING!!!!

P.S. Nick did not die in an auto related incident.

I sold it after a really wild weekend, never to own one again.

Yea, that was the idea.
Since then, I radically modified another 66 A-100, but it's not that fast. It is more geared to 'Quick'. 413 Chrysler, Hemi clutchpack 727, GM 12 bolt rear w/3:56 gears, M-50, 15 rear tires, big tube Hookers, Crane cam, windage tray, Holly 'tricky kit' in the carb, advance curve kit in dist, TRW Clevite bearings, Chrome molly rings, high volume oil pump that produces 90 psi, ( due to the new and improved pressure spring) I have to check the oil filter to make sure it doesn't push the tin cover off and let the oil escape.

It isn't all that fast, but will carry the front wheels about 50 ft from a 20 MPH roll.

It will be reborn as a truck-pull specimin, since it hooks too hard for the blacktop and has a tendency to spray parts all over the blacktop.

Making about 475 ponys on pump gas and trying to put them ALL on the ground. Might have to 'boost' it to play in the dirt.
Jerry,
wasn't the "Little Red Wagon" wheel standing dragster an A-100?

You are correct. When typing and quoting specs, I was thinking about the 4-speed manual in the SS. I corrected my post.

The one that I sold that would make me really cry was the 1966 Corvette coupe. Silver Pearl paint and silver interior. 327cu.in./350 hp. with a 4 speed close ratio manual. No knockoff wheels or sidepipes... but it had the big 36 gallon tank! (one of 66 produced that year).

I rarely filled the tank up. Three reasons:

36 gallons is a lot of weight to haul around if you intend to engage in some impromptu street racing. Great to have all that weight over the rear wheels, but weight is still weight.

36 gallons of gas in a fiberglass car is basically a rolling Molotov cocktail, waiting to be lit. I can only imagine having a serious accident and having the car light up.

But the main reason was I had better things to do with a $10.00 bill on a friday night than fill up the tank. (In 1966, gas was around .31/gallon)

lol ten bucks makes the needle barely move in the SVX...

My dad's older brother had a 67 (?) Plymouth GTX, 440 4bbl 4 speed (Might have been dual quads but I can't remember), he used to complain that he was spending 5 bucks a week on gas...

That would definitely be the gearing and the Impreza body weight vs. Leggy body... I went for a testdrive in one when they came out back in 2003 and with 5 people in the car it was chirping the tires on acceleration through 1st gear!!

Cars owned: (fastest to slowest)
- 1999 Mustang Cobra convertable (Owned for a whopping 3 months)
- 1995 Subaru SVX (before and after the tranny swap)
- 2001 Mazda Miata SE
- 1989 Chevrolet Z-24 (My first car)
- 1998 Jeep Cherokee ("Stalker" for those of you that remember back then )
- 1981 VW Rabbit Diesel 4-speed (Faster only because you had to shift less)
- 1981 VW Rabbit Diesel 5-speed (2nd car, "The Chaquita Mobile")

Cars Driven: (Fastest to slowest)
- Friend's 11 second drag WRX STI (Scary is the only way to describe it)
- Friend's 2003 Mustang Cobra (550+WHP)
- Friend's 2002 Corvette Z-06 (Somewhere around 420 WHP)
- My 1999 Cobra
- Dad's 1999 Subaru WRX STi (In Australia)
- Countless WRX's and STi's that I've Autocrossed over the years

WOW... looking at all of those I really feel like I am getting old ... Alot of time has passed since I bought that Z-24. Or changed the headgasket on my FIRST VW Rabbit Diesel. Or made the terrible mistake of purchasing a 1999 Cobra and then not being able to afford it. Still, after all of that, the one car that I will always love, the one car that still makes me feel like a little kid when I see it is the SVX... I guess that means that it is LOVE huh?

Fastest, and quickest I've owned has been the SVX.

But, working at the dealership, the fastest, and quickest, I've driven in the States was a 2006 Dodge Viper SRT-10. Ridiculous fun car. I saw triple digits more than a few times on I-64 with that one.

When I was overseas on business several years ago, I got to take a new (less than 2000km on the odo) 2000 Mercedes E-Class on the autobahn. Ran it from Munich to Salzburg. I had it running about 200kph - 120mph approx - for about 1.5 hours. That was also a lot of fun, even though I was still getting passed by several other cars that made me feel I was standing still.

It's amazing the amount of concentration and focus you have to put into driving at those speeds. Exhilerating.

My fastest would be my first car - 1990 300ZX TT. It had a top speed that was limited to 155mph, but one magazine (Motortrend iirc) tested a car w/ no limiter and it hit 165mph.

My SVT Lightning could get up to 147mph according to the Guiness Book of Records. I think the SVX could hit the mid to high 140's.
