Well, I Never...

I remember reading that this was one of the inspirations for the SVX (in the R&T Guide), but this is the first time I've seen picts of one in the real world ... and it's for sale!!

I am so in love with these doors!

Re: Who Was First

Toyota was. There was a pict of this car in the R&T Guide, but I always thought it was a concept car. It was mentioned that the idea for the windows came from the Sera. Never gave the car a second thought all these years until I found this one on eBay. I didn't know they actually made them!

But the Sera had a long reach. I believe its doors also inspired the good folks at McLaren when they were working on the F1. Will have to browse through "Driving Ambition" just to be sure.

It saddens me that the days that cars like this one are produced are long over.

I always thought the SVX had its bases in the Lamborghini Countach and the Delorean.... (at least with the windows...)

That ALMOST came to the US. Toyota's lawyers nixed it because they figured someone would roll it & be trapped, then sue.

I LOVED that design, and I also loved the Nissan NX2000. Nice lil jellybeans

And at the sales volume Toyota would have wanted to move them, someone probably would have. What's Ironic is that McLaren put an F1 on its roof with someone inside to test exactly that ... and the guy got out with no problem. Since then, the Ferrari Enzo and the Saleen S7 have pretty much copied the Sera's doors. But again, the production run of all three of those cars put together wouldn't equal an hour's output at Toyota, sooo...

I like the part at the end where he says it would be easily registered in the U.S.

You might want to reserve judgment till you actually stood beside one. These cars are tiny, tiddlers. They are so small and cute it is impossible to dodge the "Hairdresser's Car" pejorative. The word macho and the word Sera have zero in common.

Just the same, I like them. The design is very coherent, all details work in harmony.

They take their machismo kinda seriously over here. The Hyundai Coupe, which you guys call a Tiburon, 9 out of 10 drivers in those cars will be female. This is because they look great, but do not go well. The engine and suspension are crap, and these are the only things the guys are interested in.

The women, in general I hasten to add, seem to be more interested in the image than how well it goes. Hence the term Hairdresser's car.

lol yeah my bro in law has a tiburon, he wants to get the 6 speed one, but his is a doggieomatic.. He was runnin his mouth about how fast it was, till I kept up with him in my 4 cyl legacy :-P

That Sera is definately a "WTF is THAT" type of car (kinda like the SVX) I'd rock it if it was cheaper (Not paying 8 grand for a 91... Looks like it has a Corolla motor but can't quite tell...
