Exclamation Power Steering problems

I recently had a new power steering rack installed in my 92' svx. VIP said it diddnt pass inspection even tho it used to work fine. The problem is that whenever i take turns at slow speeds the power steering does not work, but when I accelerate it works fine, this is forcing me to take turns at a higher speed than necessary. could it be the fluid they used? not using dexron atf? could that be the problem? because when ever im driving the car at a constant speed it works fine but if i take my foot off the gass it is very hard to turn the wheel. VIP said they have no clue what could be causing this. Before i take it in again is there anything that I can do? I also have ecu stage 1 chip installed, maybe that is causeing some sort of malfunction with the new rack? any help would be very much appreciated thnx.

Check you Crank Pulley. This is the pulley that drives the alternator/PS belt and the AC belt.

It is made of 3 concentric rings, the center steel ring that attaches to the crank, a rubber layer, the out steel ring that drives the belts. Use some paint or white out to make a mark that crosses all three layers, drive around a bit try to ensure that the steering acts up. Check to see if the line you made shows that layers slipped.

If that outer pulley is slipping at low speeds, it may not be turning the PS pump properly.

I would bet my last $$ that it is the O-Ring that is gone or leaking. This is a $1.00 repair that can fix most of the PS problems that I have seen. The repair is explained in the How-To Documents located here under Steering.

It is hard to believe that something so small can have such a big affect on the steering system. I have seen members replace their steering and have the same symptoms after spending $300 + and then replace the O-ring which fixed it. Good luck and I hope this does it. There is a switch near the same area that also has O-rings and it can leak too, but I would do this one first.
