I think we are over complicationg things too,

The icons show how much you have donated, so far, thats all that has been implemented.

The reason that there are multiple levels, is to have multiple things to aspire to, just like everything else in a free market society, you pay more, you get more.

Basics like road maintnence, public schools, infrastructure are provided to all, its up to you what you want beyond that. To say that we should all get the same product, regardless of what we paid, goes against free enterprise. In all, if you want top honors here. You have to pay 100 bucks a year, or about 27 cents a day.

I don't know anywhere else where I can get so much information, or save so much money. ITS FREE! If I want to show support, I can drop a quarter in the bucket each day I come here, and I'll be thanked by being given a nifty symbol next to my name.

So what if someone brings it up in a thread, they are an idiot if they do, tell them so, and be on your way. Do we really need to make this an issue? Can't we just tell someone to f off like someone inevitibly does every day on the site regardless?

This is for the benefit of the network, as such, I think its a good idea. If you can't contribute, who cares? If you can, great! This just give you an incentive to give as much as you would like to, and te set the bar somewhere.

That is a great response and I agree with it 100%. You hit the nail on the head so to speak. Thanks for that reply and your thought.

I second those sentiments.

We want to keep the network inclusive, not exclusive.

Pure and simply, that means everybody is welcome, everybody can ask for help or ask questions, and expect an answer. It does not matter if they are donors or not.

Donors will get extra benefits and gratitude from everybody for keeping the whole shee-bang going.

How about we publicly recognize the administrators and moderators and let everyone else share in the wealth of knowledge as the members? Why do we need to stratify all of it?

I'll answer your last question first, Michelle, if I may.

From the time the Network has started here, after Yahoo!, it has always been run and carried by the generosity of a few of the total membership. In particular Chris who ran the IT and provided the service from his own pocket and his own generous time and efforts.

We have had a couple of fund-raisers when equipment was needed, and we got response. This response was very welcome, but a weakness as per all large groups like this, we get all the support from a small percentage of Network members, the Usual Suspects.

We are attempting to put a sponsorship system into place that will pay for the year on year running costs. To achieve this in as fair a way as possible we want to engage a wider group of sponsors, broaden the net and share the load.

In widening the numbers supporting we also think that members will realise that without ads, we are on our own, we have to help one another.

As part of the name and logo changes, we hope also to recognise administrators and mods and so on, plus acknowledge those who add to the technical knowledge base. We plan to do this as simply as possible, incorporated into the same badge system, so we don't have a confusion of different labels.

We worked hard to get the sponsorship labels ready because the servers were creaking and we needed to avoid melt-down. That's why the stratification levels were ready before the rest. We actually need the new servers in place before we can port over the data and set up the new services.

I think this is the most exciting thing to happen since the Network launched. It will be bigger and better than before. It will be self sustaining. We will enjoy it more. It is one of our goals on the administration side to make sure that everybody gets proper recognition. The other goal is to ensure that nobody gets left outside or left behind.

This is a community. It was set up so we could help each other. I hope everybody online will help to keep that spirit working in the Network.

Joe

This proposals appear finite in the minds of the administration. I for one, refuse to accept in any shape or form, displayed tokens or whatever, indicating a level of service, technical or otherwise, rendered by way of providing assistance to others. My exact reasoning has been stated here in an earlier post.

The idea is somewhat repugnant in my view. What constitutes the essence of this community, does not require a carrot.

RSVX Edit: Fixed your quote.

The new donation icons look great.

So why does my account still show the old dollar sign icons?

Kidding, David, just kidding.

I was actually wondering myself how come yours was the old style. I thought maybe you had requested it or something.

Chris will sort it out for you.

Appears to be fixed now. Thanks, Joe, for confirming you saw it too. Chris T. thought it might have been a glitch that only just I, or certain people were seeing the old icons.

Cool David.

Glad you got sorted.

We have had a few people donating who don't like the idea of the logo displaying the level of donation. With respect for their stance on the issue, we removed their logos if requested.

However, most people seem to like them. It is nice to get the feedback so we know what the majority wants. It could always be altered if it did not suit the membership.

Joe
