Guess what! You could donate $4 more and get the silver.

While i'm currently unable to donate financially, to repay the support i've recieved here, i like to post to help others as much as i can. I've been members of forums before, where there was sort of a "karma" system you can apply to. Under each post, there is a little check mark that people can click if they found the post helpful. 5 people find a post helpful, and you get a small silver star next to your name. once you hit 5 silver stars, you get a gold star, worth 25 clicks, and 5 more will get you a silver star added to that gold star, and it would simply accumulate. This could be a reward for providing helpful information, and seems more valuable than a simple post count. You can see a similar system at mx6.com in the areas of support. For instance, you can't karma a post in the lounge posting, or the for sale section, only the actual areas where assistance is being provided.

I know some of the oldere members may not think it's a good idea, because of the thousands of posts they've made in the past that would have been karma'd. We all know who you are and what you've done for the community though, because if you all hadn't, this place wouldn't be here.

Just an idea to sort of "enhance" the site.

I like it Dan!

We have thought a lot about the recognition system. We have also had discussions about how to give recognition to the many people who help with their time and with their expertise.

It's a little unfortunate that we are showing you the monetary steps between the different levels, before we have finished organising recognition for the technical contributions and indeed any other sort of contribution. This is because it was the first stage we had completed, not because it is the most important.

These different levels will also apply to break points between higher levels of service. Until we have the last server in place, a lot of this upgrade work is pending.

For those who don't like the different levels of contribution on show, I will make one small point. In business it is called the 85:15 Rule. Just as a rule of thumb, it applies in many situations like ours. In Sales, you will normally pull 85% of your income from 15% of your customers. Here in this Network, 15% of the membership will carry the Network by donations or otherwise.

As for the other 85% of the members I can only reiterate Trevor's point; student, pensioner or otherwise, anybody that can afford to own and run an SVX can afford $5. This is more than just a forum, it is a World-Wide help centre. And it is ad-free and run by amateurs.

I sell drugs, and we have a similar set-up. Our trending reports have an 80/20 report, where it'll show that 80% of your sales come from 20% of your items. I understand you guys have a lot going on right now with servers and such, and we all appriciate everything you do.

Invisible mode question

This may be slightly off the topic of this thread, but I first noticed it here.

When members are online, there is a bright green bullet next to their name. This is handy when you want to send someone a PM.

When members are offline, there is a blue bullet next to their name. No problem...

But when a member is in "invisible" mode, there is a bright red bullet next to their name (I just noticed this in a post from Trevor). Also, in the list of current active users on the main page, an asterisk next to the name also announces invisible mode.

My question is, if you are trying to be invisible, why are there icons that announce to everyone that you are here? What then would be the purpose of "invisible" mode?

Yes, what he said.

I don't understand why members want to be invisable while on the site.

It is my opinion that awarding credits, in any shape or form, for answering technical and other queries, is thwart with real dangers. A level of judgement will be required and will be controversial. This could prove to be an unwise change. The helpful make themselves obvious as a result of their displayed efforts and no special indicators are required.

Credits for those spending time in administrative duties, are most certainly in order and can in no way be subject to argument or dissent. No degree of judgement is called for in this regard.

Please stay away from credits based on human assessment.

Trevor, I am in complete agreement with your analysis and insight. You have a gift for analyzing issues and putting them into brief and coherent thought, without a wasted word.

I on the other hand am far too left-brained for that. Please bear with me in what follows, as I don't always think like a seven-course meal.

Members here dispense and receive information freely. Most information here is considered helpful to those who request it. To add gold and silver stars to the plethera of name colors, avatars, Subaru or Alcyone badges is reminiscent of the chest full of ribbons on military uniforms.

In the scenario proposed by JaySVX, if 5 people find a post "helpful", you would get a silver star.

Now suppose you gave elaborate technical instructions on how to remove the sun load sensor in the dash. It may be "helpful", but only to the one person who asks for that information, because he needs to remove it. And he needs to remove it to see if the information was indeed "helpful".

So one helpful check won't get you a star. You have to wait for 4 others to have to apply that same information to see if it is "helpful" to them as well. Only then will you get the silver star. How many sun load sensors need replacing?

But supposed someone just posted a link to where you could buy reproduction SVX floor mats? Obviously many more than 5 members would find this information "helpful" and a silver star could be given immediately.

Do the elaborate technical writeup and the simple link posting have equal merit? And who will keep track of counting multiple "helpful" check marks and converting them into silver stars, and converting those stars to gold ones, etc.

And if this helpful information seems so at the outset, but in reality is erroneous and does not prove as helpful as originally thought, do you rescind the check marks and the stars?

Giving advice freely is so much better for the health and unity of the network. Giving advice and getting points for what I would do anyway just doesn't work.

I outgrew getting gold stars for doing a good job after second grade.

A concise well worded and thought out post from the right, if ever there was one.

There is another factor which comes to mind and should be considered. What of the extra work this proposal will create for the broad shouldered few? There is the real possibility that the effort required will not produce a positive outcome. e.g. Tidying up the how to section, could constitute effort of much greater value.

I partly agree with both your analyses on this matter.

Only partly mind.

Trevor makes a very valid point regards how do you award "stars" {for want of a better word at present} for input without falling into the trap of it being a "human assessment", a subjective opinion, which WILL be challenged.

John makes a fair point about the suggested Karma system that other forums use, which will fall foul of the numbers helped in simple things versus technical depth matrix.

I believe in the KISS principle in most things. We must keep it simple. It can be done, and to make things easy to understand, it must be obvious and non cluttered.

When all this valuable input shakes down, we will have a good system that everybody understands and likes.

Joe

I'm sitting back and looking at this thread with a wry smile. What a great thing it is that a discussion like this even exists. The smile is triggered by my memory of the first forum on Yahoo where I would check each day to see if any body else had an SVX and had signed up to the group or left a post of any type.

We've come a long way and what's being done seems to work well. Will we become corporate in nature? Shareholders with votes equal to our stake in the forum? Of course not.

The family feel of the group is tantamount (Except for the odd emotional sibling argument ) I feel it's also a good thing to recognize achievements by members, but not necessarily day to day things which one would take for granted.

The star method i spoke of wasn't per post, but rather cumulative. So if you get a check for 2 people on one post, one on another, 2 on a third, it would give you the star. They would appear next to your name, and only you could see who gave you karma for what. Sorry if i made it sound confusing.
