Drive. If you put it in 3, it binds up the tranny when slowing down.

??? realy??

I was told that suby recomended driving in 3 in traffic, to stop the trans constantly changing gears and thus heating up Not to metion extra wear!

Would be interested if someone could clarify!

I drive in traffic in 3 normally, but i change gear "manually" quite a lot

Cheers,
Jake

Please elaborate what you mean by "binds up the tranny when slowing down." I was thought that selecting "3" kept the transmission from going into overdrive. What effect does slowing down have on the transmission in 3?

Today when I was driving up and down hills, putting the tranny in 3 made it act like a manual tranny (not free deceleration like in neutral). I thought 3 was good to stop tranny hunting when going up hills - not driving in traffic.

I was also told that shifting a automatic isn't worth it and could be potentially harmful to the tranny.

Aha, another question this made me think of. What advantage does the "manual" button give?

I have always driven in direct drive 3 around town and on winding roads, for obvious reasons. It is my opinion that if the selector had been labeled, 1, 2, 3 and O/D, Subaru would have saved a lot of the transmission problems.

Since the 4EAT in the SVX is similar to the '90 Legacy's... I would assume that the manual button prevents the transmission from shifting down in whatever gear you have selected. In 'D' it does nothing, but in 2 and 3 it prevents the transmission from downshifting if you hit the throttle and are in low revs.

Menarius,

It sounds like your resistor is failed or unplugged, that will cause that "downshifting" sensation in 3.

check to make sure its pluged in, located on the fender wall behind the battery.

Don't confuse low gear deceleration with the transmission "binding up".

On motorways at a sustained 70mph+ I drive in D with the "power" button off.
Otherwise, I always drive in "3" with "power" button on.

The manual button prevents the gearbox from using 1st gear when the stick is in position "2" or "3".

Is there a "power" button and i'm just missing it? In my 91 4eat xt, the "power" light would come on when the pedal was basically on the floor. Noticed it coming on in the svx ( i like to pronounce it out haha Ssvks) the other day... there's a button?

No, the power mode is engaged based on the 'urgency' in which you push the gas pedal...

meaning, if you floor it slow and steady, you will not get power mode... but if you slam it to the floor, or even have way as fast as you can power mose will engage.

I'll have to take a look at that today - but I'm pretty sure that's standard activity when the 4EAT is put in 3. As soon as I put it in drive, that sensation went away because the clutch kicked in.
