Just Bought a 92 SVX

Just put a deposit on it, going back tomorrow to pay the balance and pick it up. It's a LS-L with 93k miles and in very nice condition. Here are some pictures:

It has a pretty good noise coming from the passengers side rear wheel, I'm assuming that it's the wheel bearing. Where is a good place to buy parts, such as a wheel bearing? If someone can point me to a walkthrough that would be nice as well.

Congratulations on the buy. That is a nice Liquid Silver one! They are not that comon. Do you want to do the bearings yourself, or have someone do it for you. Do you just want a good place to buy the bearings?

I usually work on my cars myself but the weather outside is pretty cold so I may just take it to a mechanic shop.

I'm looking for a good place to buy the parts and some information about what to look out for. I saw a post that suggested you pack them yourself with synthetic grease to extend the life. If it's expensive to have a mechanic do it then I'll need a walkthrough to get it done myself.

Just curious but what would you guys expect to pay for something like this? It's in excellent condition with 93k miles, already had the transmission replaced and has all the records from when it was new.

Do a search on wheel bearings and you will find quite a few threads. I have seen some of the prices that members have paid. A good place to buy parts is from Subaruparts.com, 1stsubaruparts.com, Liberty Subaru which can be found in a search. You need a couple of special tools to do the job right, but if you have someone else do it, make sure they repack the bearings with good high heat grease. Good luck on the project. If I remember right, the job would be around $250 per wheel. I could be off a little, but that amount is what comes to mind. We are going to try to get a How-To done on it in the near future so members can see how to do it themselves.

Nice buy, we love our SVX. I just saw a couple of wheel berrings on ebay. Make sure you grease and press them to spec and the torque is lower than you would think too. here is a little advise on replacing them.

This is not a job for a shade tree mechanic. They are sealed bearings and special tools, including a press that can exert 5 tons of pressure, are needed to correctly do this job.

Don't just take it to the dealer and drop the car off (unless you want to come back with the same problem in 10,000 miles). You need to make sure the mechanic knows how to properly install the wheel bearings. There are 4 technical service bulletins issued by Subaru on proper bearing installation for the SVX!

First, the bearings come packed in shipping grease. This grease is NOT to be used for packing the bearings. This grease is to be removed and, if you want your bearings to last a long time, a synthetic grease (usually green) should be used for packing.

Second, all the nuts and bolts must be tightened to exact specifications...over tighten them and you'll be back for more wheel bearings. The proper torque specs for the lug nuts is 72-87 ft/lbs. Most shop impact wrenches are set to around 120 ft/lbs. so this is important. I could not find specs on the lateral link bolt or the axle nut.

What do you think of this, is it what I need?

ensteele - You sound like the guru around here with 11k+ posts, is it going to hurt anything to drive around on it for a few days? It's fairly loud, and the rear passengers side bearing. If you can guide me through it a little bit then I can take some pictures and do a write up

I'm certainly not a mechanic but this is not my daily driver so it's not a big deal if it sits in my driveway for a week. This is also the slow time of year for me so I have plenty of time. Last summer I replaced the head gasket on my Jeep and after that I figure I can take on about anything.

I have heard some mebers drive on them for quite a while, and others had them granade on them only after a few. It is a crap shoot if one was to guess how long they will go for after starting to make noise.

If you take pictures during the process and do some explanations, I can write it up and get it into the How-To Docs for you. Good luck.

Some members have also used a Hub Puller and had good resultus. Make sure you read the Service Bulletins on this topic.

I have heard that some mebers like the Timken bearings. There was a thread about them a few days ago. They should be fine. Someone may jump in here and give us their thoughts as well.

So you can get the bearings pre-packed and sealed and sent to you? If that's the case then it shouldn't be to bad at all. Similar to you, last year i did a valve cover gasket on an mx-6 ls, which for the front was easy, but the rear being a bit tricky, as you have to take the intake manifold off, as well as the throttle-body, and a couple other pieces. I had no idea what i was doing going into it, and simply removed pieces until i got down to what i needed. Common sense, a good sense of adventure, time, and the right tools, and you can do pretty much anything. Welcome and good luck.

Your passenger side (right side) rear wheel is on backward, which probably means another wheel is backward as well. Wheels with a raised letter "L" go on the left (driver) side of the car. Right-side wheels have no markings. I call attention to it because someone may have made this error when rotating the tires. If that happened, and if your tires are directional (most are) then you are running tires in the wrong direction of rotation. Check the arrow on your tires and make sure they are all running in the right direction according to the manufacturer's specifications. Best wishes.

The grease they use at the place we get our bearings pressed is hi-temp and it is kind of a pinkish-red color. I stand there and watch to make sure they get all the packing grease off first -- if you don't insist, they won't do it. If there is any left on there, it interacts with the hi-temp grease and breaks it down. Some places will "steam clean" the bearings first to get off all the packing grease.

When we picked up my silver, the left rear bearing was so loud, you couldn't carry on a conversation inside the car. Tom drove it 4 1/2 hours home (very carefully) and when they pulled the bearing, it fell into pieces.

If you have access to a parts car but not a shop that can press the bearings in, you can just replace the whole steering knuckle, if it has a good bearing in it.

And Tom probably has the torque specs you need. I'll ask him to post when he gets a chance.

Thanks for the tip, I pick it up tonight and I'll check it out. What parts am I going to need for this? Advance Auto Parts has a SKF Bearing for $55.99 which seems to be a pretty good price. They also have inner and outer seals availabe, am I going to need those as well?

Before about 8:00p.m. yesterday I had no idea that I would be getting an SVX and I'm trying to take in all the information I can as quick as I can.

This is the place to do it. There's lots of info in the how-to locker (look at the menus in the upper right corner of the page) and the "search" feature comes in handy and saves the gurus from having to answer the same questions over and over again.
