New SVX

Hey guys, I am buying a 1994 SVX AWD LSi this friday. I checked the trans for issues, and none found, wheel bearings no problem as well. Car is in relatively good condition, minor paint chips on the rear spoiler, a big dent in the roof, but it's only on the sunroof part, so i should be able to replace just the sunroof and not have any issues. Other than that the car is in pretty good condition. It has 127k miles and the price is 4k. It has some aftermarket rims on it already with low profile tires, but they don't look bad on the car. I have a couple more things i want to check out on it(go over trans again, check for electrical issues, suspention, breaks, etc) and if all goes well, I'll have myself a new(to me) SVX.

I had an ad out looking to buy a car, and this guy contacted me saying suburu svx, and i had never heard of it before, so i jumped on the web for some pictures to get an idea of what it looked like. The windows look cool, the rear end is most impressive. The fact that it has AWD is slick, with power everything. The engine looked clean, but not like it had been cleaned. Eventually i'd like to do the 5MT swap, because i wasn't exactly looking for an auto, as i've never owned a car that was auto, only my current explorer.

Any feedback or additional things to check out would be appriciated. Also if anyone has a sunroof they're parting out in the area, that would be great, i'd be looking for a red one.

Welcome to the site. There is a List of things that you should check on a used SVX in the How-To Documents. Look here for it.

The color you want to have on the sun roof is Barcelona Red. 95 and after are the Brilliant Red.

Good luck with the buy and come back for help fixing anything that it needs. I would add a tranny filter and cooler to help it last as long as possibe.

Checklist for buying an svx.

Tranny is importantant, yep.
Good to hear you check the bearings, but make sure you check the REAL problem areas.

Did you make sure the check valve on the compulsion generator isn't leaking? This is a big failure point on most svxii, if not properly checking compulsion, it could cost you big money in things like waxing obsessivley, lost productive time staring at the rear end. Possible total female cohabitation failure on multiple levels.

Next I would check the multiplication plenum. There isn't a known fix for this either, ask *ahem* a few members on this board. A few of us have bought as many as 12 SVXs trying to find a fix for this ultimatly very expensive mechanisim. Of course, this only leads to further multiplication of SVXii. Make sure your garage is big enough.

Next make sure the your Maddening Owner Needed Equipment, wallet Yielding Pitifully and Incessantly Trap (M.o.n.e.y. P.i.t.) is properly plugged. Some people on this board have simply installed a credit card swiper in the car, while this doesn't save them any heartache, is does shorten the amount of time they spend buying things they don't need for their car.

Is the Valium dispenser working? This seems to help owners after thier car is mistakenly identified as an eclipse, or a probe, by otherwise trained automotive professionals.

I'm sure other people on this board can help you with the other, less important stuff like dead duty solenoids, gear flaring, sunroof leaks, cracked knock sensors, vacuum leaks, exploding diffs and seatbelt problems Others will help with impossible to clean suade, the proper pronunciation of Escanine and Alcyone, and what SVX actually stands for. Still more will help you deal with people asking about how you made those custom windows. But I think I've covered the basics.

Anyone?

The only thing i found that was kind of uncomfortable was how far the seatbelt is. I'm a pretty short guy, so the seat is rather far forward, and i can't reach the seatbelt without grabbing it before i get in the car.

The driver window doesn't go down, but goes up, switch i guess is the problem. I didn't try to open the sunroof, but that's a minor concern that i can fix after the fact. I love the red that it's in, it looks really good, and the condition of the paint is very good. Is there much of a difference between the barcalona red and the brilliant red?

I've already checked with what it would run for parts for tranny filter, just have to figure out where the plumbing for it is. I'm relatively mechanically inclined so i shouldn't have much problems with that. I was surprised how LITTLE room there is under the hood, they packed it pretty well.

Thanks, i'll be sure to check into that write up on what to look for. I've already got plans for a 5mt or 6mt, we'll have to see where that goes... Thanks again guys.

Yea, my switch is fussy to. I used some electronic parts cleaner and compressed air and it worked again for quite a while, but it's acting up again. My passenger side goes down, but not UP.

I have to use the drivers side switch (energetically) to get it to go up.

It seems like you need to clean both of them, drivers and pass side, at least I did to get it working.

I owned one Automatic before I got my SVX. I actually have grown to like it, highway driving is the best.

BTW, PA has a pretty high concentration of SVX's!

There is a meet at Reading coming up, so you should find out about it. You will be able to learn lots about your SVX there.

The Barcelona Red is a darker and richer red in my opinion.

Check out the How-To Documents. There are instructions on how to do the cooler and filter. You will be able to see which line is inflow and outflow as well. Have fun.

I was reading up on the Reading Meet. I defidently want to check it out, as it's only an hour away(I'm by king of prussia). Would be really great to see others and get some advice/tips on keeping the car problem-free.

Well if my trans ever goes, i'll be doing the 5MT swap, as 5speed is my preference, i've never owned an automatic car before, my explorer is my first auto. I plan to install the trans cooler as soon as i get it, and the sunroof replacemnt to get rid of the nasty dent. I'll post pics as soon as i pick the car up on friday.

Congrats, check out www.car-part.com for a sunroof in the right color if no one here has one. The shady guy on ebay is selling barcelona stuff and I'd think you're a brilliant red. Red is tough to match but not impossible so painting one is an option. Bad thing about red is it oxidizes pretty quick so even if you find one it might not be quite right after spending time in a yard. If its just a dent without paint damage might wanna see if a paintless dent removal can pull it out first.
