Hiya Joe,

We had snow here the begining of Feb only around 2" of settled snow, I took the SVX out for a blast around the lanes, roundabouts and duel carrageways near me.

Its 1 of the best handling cars I have driven in the snow, much better than my type R impreza with the trick diff and 70% rear wheel drive.

Poweslides & drifting at upto to 80 were lovely and controlled and when the the rear felt like it was going a little too far the front wheels kicked in to drag it all back into line and throttle steering was fantastic.

I have a feeling that the 4ws does not activate when the diff transfeers power to the front wheels, it felt very neutral & stable and tracked like a conventional rwd car.

Darren

"Powerslides and drifting at up to 80"

Nyuk, nyuk. Hey I thought you were going to keep your car pristine and scratchless!!

Strange way to be going about it.

However, so far as I know you are the first person to have checked out the snow handling behaviour of the 4WS model, for that, respect.

{I would have thought that the 4WS pattern of turning the wheels in the same direction as the front wheels would be beneficial in snow drifting, cutting down the tendency to yaw. No??}

Hiya Joe,

It still is prestine and scratchless

There is no feeling of the rear wheel steering operating in any form of slide, possibly its not able to be felt with the amount of opposite lock and the rear being at an angle greater than that of 15% the wheels are, plus the lack of grip I would think does not help the feel.

On the whole I was extremely impressed and had total confidence the car was doing & would do what I was asking. Yes it was a bit of fun but the serious side being its nice to know whats under you when you get into a position of needing to know how a car will react in an extreme situation.

At the end of the day I bought the car to enjoy and would rather drive it as it was designed, I guess I have the Nick Mason mentality, but not the Ferrari money lol

Darren.

The Americans have a good phrase for that, which possibly suits you, sir!

Glad you're enjoying it.

The MSRP of the base model 1992 SVX-L was $24,445, with the top of the line model with touring package, the LS-L, listing at $28,000. By the end of its production run in 1997, the price had risen to $36,740 for the top-of-the-line LSi.
There is no 92 SVX-L. We have 92 LS and 92 LS-L, 93 is the same, 94 is when we switch to L, LS, and LSi models. Oh and 94s have the 1/2 year LE model for those of you that care... my 2 cents.

Lwin - all of the US 93s (25th AE) were the LS-L models.

L, or Ls, Ls-L oh what the L!!!

This is partly my point.

Primarily [correct me if I'm wrong] these designations apply to trim levels in the different model years in the US.

Focusing on these trim levels available only in the US allows the essay on the car to degenerate to the sort of debate that happens all the time at Classic Car meets. To try and be definitive about the US trim levels and ignore trim levels for the Parent Country market, and the Rest of the World markets seems to me to be gilding the lily. On one side only

In Japan, there were initially two trim versions, Version E and Version L. Version L is the one with electric 4WS, the only model in the world to have that feature, so it is notable. Both JDM models in the early years had options of leather, airbags etc. This is not easily defined, and so should be left for another forum, at least I think it should.

The European and UK market by contrast only got cars that had everything [except 4WS], fully loaded.

Australia and New Zealand got the good gearbox, but plastic headlights and not always leather. Another significant change.

Focusing on price in the USA is another area with potential pitfalls. I get the impression that in the US the asking price of $30,000 or more is seen as "premium" and part of the difficulty with marketing and selling the car. In the UK market where the car came fully loaded it retailed at up to £35,000. That is UK pounds, at today's exchange rate equivalent to $70,000. So making a big deal out of a $30,000 selling price while elsewhere in the world people were paying $60,000 plus is also missing the point, a bit.

To sum up, I think it is a mistake to focus on trim availability levels for one market.

It is a further mistake to discuss trim availability levels for different years, and particularly so for one market only.

It is another mistake to talk about price structures in one market, particularly the market where the car was cheapest. It would make more sense to compare the car's price placement in markets generally, and the rival models it was designed to compete with or beat.

My 2 cent [European cent ]

Joe

Sorry to be so long-winded.

I could have made four or five posts out of that last one, and racked up my numbers.

All AUDM SVXs came as standard with glass headlights, and leather trim.

I believe that the NZ models were closer to the JDM spec, with plastic headlights and optional leather trim.

Joe,

Maybe we should do another spreadsheet (similar tothe paint codes document).

For each market,we would need the different models offered, the prices (and US equivalent) and significant features (gearbox, 4WS, glass headlights/washers/etc.)

A general paragraph summarizing some of the differences between the markets could be inserted into the Wikipedia artcle. A link to this spreadsheet would be there as well. Just like the existing link to the color codes, each time we updated the spreadsheet, these changes would be in the article.

Without getting off-topic, is there any more to add to the color code/availability sheet?

John, I think that is an admirable approach.

We could also use local members to give us local information. Thanks Jason BTW for elucidating the Down Under situation for us. I'm only aware you guys got the good gearbox like the Japanese one, I would not have seen any information on trim levels and equipment. Mostly because you Down Under guys never compiled it and posted it up, James was more interested in the JDM specs.

Regards the colour charts John, the only places where our information is weak or unconfirmed, shall we say, is in what exact colour options were available in each European market from year to year.

Some assumptions have been made based on marketing fliers doing the rounds with colour charts on them, but we have never had real [as in Subaru marketing insider info] confirmation of exact colour options available everywhere.

Our spreadsheet is more than 95% correct though, just the same.

Joe
