Great. Congratulations. No, there were no red flags. If you want, pm Storminorman to get all of the info. He said that it was sound, but need some TLC. Good luck and let us know how it goes. If you can't get it from him, pm me with your email and I will send you the report.

I can vouch for the car and the owner.

Don't worry, I am trustworthy. It's not something that I would ever ask from a seller because I am a mechanic. Why pay a stranger to drive it around the block and measure the tire tread when they have absolutely no liability and will only see it as a sales opportunity? It's even more of a PITA to try arrange to do long distance when you don't have much time when it's light out. As a seller, I've done it three times. Two times they made a big long list of nonsense with ridiculous price quotes next to each item. The other time, they found less than half the things that I disclosed up front to the seller. And one time the buyer backed out and left me to pay the inspection bill after trying like hell to get the info out the dealer for free. Getting someone who you know is a much better idea. And I got to meet Norm!

Info!

Okay, I was planning on posting Storminorman's reply before this, but work got busy in a hurry. Here it is:

------------------

Well, I went by, saw (as well as you can really "see" anything at night) and rode in it yesterday. Body is basically straight, one scrape on the passenger side, the interior is as worn as one would expect for a car with over 200K on it. Sunroof works with a little upward push (as does mine, BTW). Air conditioning is a question as there is no belt attached presently.

The 05 Mustang wheels facinate me and seem to run/track OK. This is news, as far as I'm concerned. Steve has the original wheels but I don't know what shape they are in. The transmission is out of a Legacy & the majority of the original trans parts are available with the car, I believe. It drives OK, I don't really have anything to compare the 4.44 conversion with... Can hear the rear bearing. Brakes seemed OK, no squeals , no clunks I could hear.

He quoted $2,350: most of the work that has been done by him (besides the tranny conversion) was to clear multiple codes: there is still one code (#24, I believe) that still appears after running a while: he indicated this is not a crucial code as the car has passed Oregon DEQ. This is a good thing IMHO.

My OPINION (and I hope I don't get anyone in trouble including myself) is that this may not be the optimal car for someone's 1st SVX. Unless you have already budgeted substantial additional funds for refurbishment this could be (or, may not be?) an expen$ive proposition. Without a better mechanical review up on a rack, pulling the plugs, compression test, inspection of the timing belt, etc. it is just ??????

I wonder what report almost any of our cars would get with a mechanic crawling underneath: I have a "Factory-sponsored OFFICIAL inspection" performed at the Dealership for mine when it had 89K miles on it from '98 or so: they suggested the 90K service, a timing belt(?) trans flush, engine flush, radiator flush, valve cover gaskets, cam seals, water pump, etc.

At 120K I had the timing belt and seals done: I'm looking to do the valve cover gaskets this month with 140K on the car... Oh, well!

From one ride and look in the dark, I just can't tell.

Is it worth a look by you? You'll have to decide. I would certainly consider it a pretty good running parts car for someone with another SVX (or two, or 12!): if I had any room for it I would consider it as I have a '92 Claret & no parts car.

Let me know what you decide, please.

Norm

----------------------

So I was planning on calling, but it looks like crawlerdan is going to get there first anyway...he's scheduled to go wednsday and there's no way I can get away from work this week.

I'm usually too careful about this stuff...but it's a lot harder to find a rare car like the SVX, so I'm willing to go further. I flew out to Chicago to buy a '91 Audi 200 Turbo Quattro about five years ago... The SVX sounds good - elninoalex told me about the bearings, and I had already budgeted for a full 120k workup - but I can't get away this week. Bah.

I only had it listed for a week on craigslist before. Only one person other than Norm has looked at it. He felt it had too many miles on it to turbocharge it. I guess they didn't notice the 211K in the ad(now 212K). There's what?...a zillion other cars out there better suited to boosting than a 212K rare car that's just fine the way it is. Oh well, he did try to call me again this morning for something. Someone save this car from the scrapper. I know I can get well over my asking price by parting it out, but I'm trying to avoid that.

I would agree with you one trying to save the car and not part it out.

I will try to contact the member who is up in this area and let him know that it is still available.

Argh...

Elninoalex, sorry, have just been buried at work (they made me the acting team lead, so I have less time than ever.)

Still wanna see the car. I'll call this week and see what I can set up with you.

I don't wanna see anybody part out a Claret...
