Installing A CD player

Hi again,

I'm attempting to install a Pioneer DEH-2800MP CD player, I have all the trim and stuff removed, all the wires stripped, sorted, and ready to solder, I'm having one problem, and one query.

1 problem - There are two red/black wires, can I just use trial and error to pick the right one to connect? I don't wanna blow anything out, the FAQ even acknowledges there are two same wires...

Left Rear Speaker - Red / Black (to) Green / Black
Dimmer-A* - Red / Black (to) Orange / White

1 query - I amassed a good sized cassette collection in my lifetime, any possible/easy way to keep the cassette deck working with a new headunit? not a big deal, just curious

Sorry, I can't answer those questions without being there, but i have a 3800MP in my car, and i love it. It works great and really makes the most out of all the speakers, and my 10" Sub. For the price, you really have a pretty decent deck, good choice.

1- do you have a multimeter? with the key turned on and headlights on, you should see a voltage on the dimmer wire and a ground. if you touch a 9V battery to the plus and minus speaker wire, you should hear a hum from the speaker (don't hold the battery on there long, just make a quick check.)

i'd recommend a Radio Shack little pocket multimeter if you don't have one(~$20). comes in handy quite a lot.

2- throw the cassettes away and get a mp3 player!

Its an MP3 player anyway, so I'm set.

Thanks for the input everybody, this site makes it a joy to work on an SVX!

Like Landshark said, you should see +12V between the dimmer wire and ground when the headlights are on. You have to turn on the key and the headlights switch. The parking lights button won't do it.

A voltmeter is a good tool to have. There are ones even cheaper than $20 if you look around.

If you don't have one, you could always borrow a 12V bulb (tail light, perhaps) and test with that.

To test the speaker wire, a 1.5V battery will suffice. You'll hear a thump when you first connect the battery as the cone moves. As Landshark said, don't hold the connection, just touch it briefly.

Now please tell me that your SVX's factory harness had already been cut off by a previous owner or installer. If your harness was intact, you could have used one of my wiring harnesses and avoided the issue with the Red/Black wires.

Yes it's possible. You could rig it to connect to the Aux input on your new HU (assuming it has one). But that would require more wiring, parts, and hassle than it would be worth.

Well, I wanted to buy your adapter, but honestly, I'm cheap...

I just did trial and error and picked the correct red/black wire for the left rear speaker by chance on the first try. Guess it is about time to pick up voltmeter and a soldering gun, after a new o2 sensor... and a new knock sensor... and cam and crank seals... and a timing belt.... damn I'm in for it

I presume you guys no how the speaker polarity can be ascertained/checked using a torch cell.
