Rear Wheel Bearings
I'm sure this over'bearing' topic gets posted enough times to warrant its own separate forum, but I have my Subaru OEM wheel bearings, inner & outer seals, and axle nuts sitting on the desk next to me and am taking the car to my local shop at the end of the week. They're a big operation and they always do an excellent job, but I don't want to have this job done again for many years down the road, so I'm going to inform them the proper procedure:
1) Repack the bearings with hi-temp bearing grease 2) torque the axle nut to 150 ft/lbs 3) anything else I'm missing that a good shop would not know? I supply my own parts and then tell them how to do the work... they're gonna love me -Thanks!

Don't let them press the new wheel bearing into the to hub as most damage is done tot he bearing at this time. They can press it part way but the final distance should be pulled up with the wheel nut.

I would pack the bearings myself. I told my mechanic to do it the first time and the second time my bearings went bad. On the third time I decided to repacked it myself. I noticed the original grease was in the bearings my mechanic installed. When I confronted him about it, he said the bearings already come greased. So even after I told him to re-grease them, he didn't. Provide the grease for your mechanic and have him put it in writing or do it yourself. Good luck.

AlcyoneDaze, I always give the shop a detailed list of what I want done (and on rare occasion the parts, too), but this time they thought I was off my rocker when I went in and said it was time for new bearings after 40,000 miles. I left the car there for an afternoon and that evening the boss fairly growled, "I agree with ya that somthing's goin' on with them bearings," almost as if he'd wished I'd been wrong. Then he asked, "Is it just somethin' about that car?" I'd be interested in knowing how many miles folks typically get on new bearings. Good luck. dcb |

Will any hi-temp bearing grease be acceptable for this application? any recomendations, especially from people who have long-lasting bearings

Suggestions:
1. Have the hubs checked to make sure that they are not distorted due to improper bearing installation(s) in the past. If the hubs are distorted, it really doesn't matter how good a job you do packing the new grease in the new bearings. 2. Assuming the hubs are okay, remove them from the car and take them to a machine shop with the new bearings and have the bearings pressed in with a shop press - making sure everything stays lined up correctly (thus keeping the hub from being distorted by a "cocked" bearing being pressed into it) -Bill
