SVX passes NJ emissions test

SVX passes NJ emissions test.
This is a big relief for me.
285,164 miles and the cats are still working or the engine is working very clean. I do not know which and I do not care about this for another two years and 60k miles.

Initial test on 9-23-06 failed with HC’s at 198, 100 is pass. CO was .45% pass is .50% and CO2 was 14.1% at 2628 rpm engine speed no load.

Today the HC was 100. Just made it past and CO was .43% and CO2 was 14% at 2608 rpm.

This is what I did, I changed the air filter, fuel filter and PVC and then I adjusted the idle on the throttle body to about 750rpm. It would not go any lower. Filled up with Sunoco 93 octane and drove around for an hour before the appointment to warm-up the SVX. The first test was done with regular gas cause that is all the station had when I went there, a time constraint problem on my part.

Previous results:
10-11-00 HC=72, CO=.09%, CO2=14.8% at 2348 rpm
9-28-02 HC=64, CO=.18%, CO2=14.8% at 2515 rpm
10-2-04 HC=97, CO=.22%, CO2=14.0% at 2464 rpm
10-7-06 HC=100, C0=.43%, CO2=14.0% at 2608 rpm

Yup I loosened that 8mm lock nut and turned that little allen wrench screw on the throttle body and brought the idle from 1200 rpm down to 750 rpm. It would not go any lower. I have a spare throttle body if this is a problem and the brass plates chew into the aluminum body as Beav says will happen. I think it is pretty safe. The screw is still holding open the plates a small amount.

New spark plugs went in last spring. However I think I may still have a coil or two that are not doing there full share.

Well any comments on this?

Take care,
John

based on my experience with the MD emissions folks, I think you would have passed with flying colors if you had just replaced the secondary cat (this is all I did after mine failed with ~185,000 on the clock).

I have had my exhasut down a few times and I think the flanges are wearing out faster than the pipes. Have you noticed this?

Given that the only "stock" parts left in my exhaust are the exhaust manifolds and the flanges that bolt up to them, I can only say that they look fine

Do you have the HC levels before and after the cat back change?

sounds like you need a good TB cleaning and ECU reset. Bring it to me and I will take care of you

Well yeah that sounds like a great idea. Everytime I clean the TB the idle speed goes up a few 100 rpm. I must be taken metal off!!!

Yeah, they're around here somewhere...I can tell you from memory that after replacing the secondary cat that the levels dropped waaaaaay below the pass/fail limit.
