The buzz is probably caused by the exhaust shrouds vibrating. I know it's getting to be very annoying on my '92 Ebony.
I'm thinking about trying to remove mine, then I'll just have to stop parking on dry grass. Dan |

Well, their pourpose is to make it as annoying as possible to remove the exhaust. Do yourself a favor and remove all the heat sheilding , minus the one on the main cat.
Oh, and a secondary thing is to prevent any kind of grass or leaves from catching on fire. Because lets face it..after a long drive, EVERYONE parks on a large heap of leaves But seriously, if your planning on being under the car more than a year, youd be better off removing them.

i removed all the shildong on mine..... no probs
The buz maybe comin from here: If this is not the problem, id bash the crap out of the cat with a hammer, then id drill holes in it, then id go to en exaust palce and get it fixed or replaced

Internal
Some of them do buzz from the inside and it can be very annoying. A year or so ago there was a thread on here where a member cut it open and did a fix on it and then welded it closed.

I think you guys are thinking of the primary muffler buzz, not the secondary cat.

Primary Muffler, aka "Stock Resonator"
FYI - no one should be seriously considering cutting open a catalitic convertor - lots of nasty heavy metal in there that has been know to cause cancer. You're better off just replacing them with high flow convertors now on the market.... -Bill

Clarification
I should clarify my somewhat ambiguous post. I do not advocate cutting open the catalytic converter. I was actually referring to the resonator. The catalytic converter has rarely been a problematic noise maker. It is nearly always the resonator that developes the tinny sounding buzz and is the one that the member on here had a fix for opening it and welding in an interior piece and then closing it. Another option, of course is to simple cut out the resonator and replace with a straight piece of exhaust pipe.

the sound from my '92 got so bad I couldn't stand it... I took it to a muffler shop and they replaced my resonator with a generic "import resonator" worked well didn't change the sound or performance to my knowlede, and only cost about $85
