2WD 4EAT Transmission Information

2WD 4EAT Transmission Information (kinda long but may help)

For those in the 2WD minority… I thought you might want to have this information for reference, just in case you ever have the same transmission trouble I had.

My transmission failed and when it was torn down, the transfer/reduction gears were chewed up. The gears in my transmission had 51 & 53 teeth. After waiting 2 weeks for parts, and twice getting used gear sets with different tooth numbers than were in the transmission I did some investigation.

The original transmission was built with a 47 & 53 teeth gear sets, the 47 teeth gear is the one that is mounted on the pinion shaft. This is part # 31452AA160 – This part is now manufacture discontinued (MD). In addition, the pinion shaft that came in the original transmission is part # 38100AA400 – this part is also MD’d.

This is what I found out… There is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) PT280397 that states, if you have a reduction/transfer gear failure you should replace with the following parts:
1. Pinion shaft part # 38100AA581 (replaces part # 38100AA400)
2. Gear set part # 31452AA161 (replaces gear set 31452AA160 - this gear now has 51 teeth)
3. Gear set part # 31446AA281 (replaces gear set part # 31446AA161- note: the old part # is still available but should be changed to the new gear)
4. 3 minor parts – collar (32296AA050), O-ring (806931020) & nut (38380AA010)

What I didn’t know was that my transmission had already had this service work done on it… The way I found out was… I asked the local Subaru dealership for a printout of the service work preformed on the car. He went into the “Subaru Star System” and requested a “Vehicle Claim History Report” on my VIN. The printout shows in detail (down to the part numbers) the service work that was done on the car. The transmission in my car had been rebuilt in April 1998 (with only 24,179 miles on the car!!) with the parts referenced in the TSB.

The good news is (if you can even think about calling transmission trouble good news!!!), I only had to buy the two new gear sets (since the pinion shaft wasn’t damaged). The car should be ready in about two days (with new clutches and an auxiliary cooler).

Disclaimer: Some of this information was taken from my cryptic notes and may not be 100% correct…

Bill

I don't have FWD, but it was interesting info just the same. Isn't it wonderful the things we learn while we're spending money?

Oh, and since that was your first post: WELCOME TO THE SVX WORLD NETWORK, and post, post, post some more.

Steve,

Thanks for the welcome…. I was an infrequent poster to the Yahoo site, but it now bites!!!

I’m a fairly new SVXer… 1994 FWD Blue LE bought in August 2001 that my 22-year-old son uses (the one with the bad tranny) and a 1996 Burgundy (Bordeaux [sp?] Pearl) bought in November 2001 (currently being repaired… my daughter ran into a tree). I also have a green 1992 that we used for parts to fix the ’96.

Bill,
I just want to "officially" welcome you to the Network.

I'm glad you decided to post such useful information as your first post. Not like (me) some of us (me) who are (me) intent on posting useless (me) drivel.

Again, WELCOME ABOARD!

HAHAHA! Yeah, I noticed the mass exodus, so, I figured things needed spicing up for those who remained. I mean, what have I got to lose?

Angry UPDATE - 2WD 4EAT Transmission Information

Wellllllll the tranny's still not fixed @!%#$@#@.....

Here's the letter I just sent to SOA!!!

<<1994 Subaru FWD SVX VIN JF1CX3234RK101289 Mileage 50,400 miles

I am still having trouble with my transmission… I have been talking with Sephy and Dawn at SOA customer service [Case # 37***2] and I want to document my problem before escalating to higher management at Subaru or Fuji.

My transmission reduction/transfer (driven/drive) gears failed in my 1994 FWD Subaru SVX. The mechanic fixing the transmission ordered used parts (hypoid shaft and driven/drive gears) to fix the problem, but when they arrived they were a different tooth count than are currently in my transmission. The tooth count in my transmission for these gears are 51/53, the tooth count on the gears he bought are 47/53 (the guy he bought them from said they came out of a FWD SVX Transmission).

I had a Subaru Star report (repair history) run on my VIN and discovered the transmission in my car was rebuilt in 1998 and it referenced Technical Service Bulletin PT280397. I talked to Sephy at Subaru of America and she said that TSB PT280397 shows the required replacement parts to fix the transmission and gave me the part numbers that were replaced – the part numbers matched the part numbers on the history report.

Assuming that we didn’t need the hypoid gear set (since it wasn’t broken and the Star Report showed that the new part # [38100AA581] was installed in 1998) I ordered the driven/drive gear sets (Pt #’s 31452AA161/31446AA281) from Serra Chevrolet/Subaru in Birmingham. The new gears have the same tooth count as in my transmission (51/53).

However, after installing the gears, the transmission mechanic said the teeth on the two gears don’t mesh together properly. I.e., they meet at the tips but don’t fully imbed into the other gear. He said, if these were the same type gears that were installed in the transmission when it was rebuilt in 1998 that is probably why it failed.

Is this a know problem? The car only has 50K miles and this is the second transmission failure!
Is there another fix?
Are there any recalls on this transmission or is there any warranty on the work that was done in 1998 with 24,000 miles?

Do you know if the original stock transmission gear set was 47/53 teeth (i.e., will the used set the mechanic bought work in the transmission)?

Please answer as soon as possible, I have been without the vehicle for over 2 weeks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Bill Fagan >>

I'll post how this plays out!!!!

Dangit, Bill. I thought I had it bad. Sounds like they sent you some Legacy parts. "Well, they *looked* the same." Those were the famous words of the guy who installed the Legacy trans into my SVX, when I FINALLY tracked him down. Sheesh! Hope you get it sorted out soon.
