cutting out
Ok, It would appear I am the newest victim of the weird cutting out thing I've read of some of our SVX's. It started on christmas after I put in a new driver side halfshaft and welded up some leaks on the exhaust and has gotten worse today. It stalled like 5 times today while either slowing to a stop or sitting idling and when accelerating it cuts out and completely dies it seems until I let off the pedal and hit it again then it's just fine. On one occasion today it put up a fight to start running again after cutting out while accelerating. After a full stall, It fires up and runs just perfect again. I also did a full throttle run done the road and it was randomly missing a cylinder it seemed, But after letting off and hitting it again it accelerated fine. So are there any answers to this mysterious problem yet? BTW, The only codes in the computer are 32 and 37 and it's been throwing those codes for months now. I had both sensors replaced a year ago. HELP!

Have you checked the fuel filter or air filter.

Jason,
Sorry to hear you're having this problem. As you know I've been fighting this for months. I might have it fixed. Only time will tell. Replacing the MAF seemed to do it. I bought one from a member of this sight for about 60 bucks. New ones are over 300 now. I had tried cleaning my old one and it had no effect. No stalls in about 3 weeks.

Yeah I stopped using the K&N....i just use a regular filter. Would the STi panel filter be the same as a K&N?

I have seen the panel filters and they are paper ones without oil. I know that they also have the panel ones with oil, so as long as they don't use oil, I think it would be safe.

If a filter is meant to be oiled, then it should be oiled. The oil is a key component to trapping the dust/dirt particles with those kinds of filters. Its just that those filters can cause problems with MAF sensors, so they aren't the best thing for an EG33 motor.

I've never had any problems with a K&N messing with my MAF. I've cleaned the MAF 3 or 4 times before, But I think I'll try it once more. If that don't do it then I'll try to find a way to get my hands on another sensor to try out. I can't afford to just buy one right now with the current off work on disability thing. Keep me informed Billb on how it's going. any other suggestions? anyone have specs for testing the MAF and directions?

To repeat myself from the post of a few weeks back, I had identical drivability problems. The car came with a K & N filter when I bought it almost 5 years, & 60K miles ago. I cleaned & re-oiled the filter 18 months ago - no problems. Replaced the original MAF sensor with an Impreza unit two weeks ago. The car ran fine. I decided to clean the K & N filter again since I had the hood open. Car ran fine for a day. Then decided to try the original MAF again after the vinegar bath process. SVX now "loses" two cylinders & blows blue smoke. Impreza MAF re-installed & all's fine. I'd say MAF kaput. Now if an oiled filter leads to long term disintegration of Mr. MAF sensor, I'd like to know, since I'll be installing a used SVX MAF next week. Ron.

Jason,
Definitely try cleaning the MAF. I did the vinegar bath on my old one but I never reinstalled it. After reading Ron's post on his bad experience, I was afraid to try it. The car was running good with the replacement sensor, so why mess with it. I'm a little hesitant to say that my stalling problem is fixed even though it hasn't stalled in 3 weeks. I always had a theory that the car ran better when it was cold. I will certainly let you know how it goes.

Vinegar is basically a dilute solution of acetic acid in water. Oils are not necessarily soluble in acid solutions. For instance, the oil in italian dressing isn't soluble in the vinegar in the italian dressing. I'd be more tempted to use a solvent rated for electronics rather than an acid solution.
