Transmission shot - need advice

Hello all,

The auto transmission of my bf's SVX is completely busted.

He would like to replace the auto tranny with a 5 or 6-speed one. I've read through Huck's document on how to convert this.

Anyway, here in Belgium hardly anyone knows what an SVX is. (Only 5 driving around here)

One mechanic first claimed he could do it with all the necessary parts from a Subaru Impreza GT Turbo, but then later claimed it would never fit.

Can anyone give me some decent advice please?

Will the transmission of A Impreza fit? Or will the one from a Legacy be better as this is also a 3.0?

Thanks!!!

Grtz,

Kay

Impreza trans will fit, 5 OR 6 speed, just make up some shafts and mounts, add the pedal box and 'graft-in' some speed sensors etc and you're done!!!
(Done one myself,(6-spd), took me around 3 weeks including waiting for the shafts to be made/resplined. Cheers on the Cafe's there......

Cheers
Sixpack Subaru-do a search, (again?), there is more info here I am sure!!

Yes all impreza's and legacy's will bolt on all you need is a stronger clutch and pressure plate... stage 2 and up.
Also svx is not a 3.0 it's a 3.3 liter boxer six, maxima is a 3.0

But the new Legacy has a 3.0 Boxer 6 in it, I think that is what they where referring too...

Kay McRae - Welcome to the site. You should be able to get all of the information you need for this project here. It may take a little time, but it should be here. Good luck with the project.

Welcome to the site!

I used a 2002 WRX 5spd tranny and I did not have to touch the axles. The driveshaft does need to be lengthened though.

Welcome to the site Kay. As all other members have already said, any impreza/lagacy tranny will fit into svx. I swapped my svx tranny with an 98 outbak legacy tranny. So, its not a problem with 5 spd too. There are many members over here to help you out.

All of the Subaru 5-speed transmissions will fit. The critical exterior dimensions are all the same (same length, same width at the half-shafts, same input shaft length, compatible bolt pattern on bell housing). The key differences are the gearing and the type of clutch. The later model 5-speeds have a hydraulic clutch, and gearing varies from year to year and model to model. IMHO, the US-spec WRX 5-speed has the best gearing for an SVX motor, but none of the trannys have bad gearing. The newer trannys generally have stronger gears. The hydraulic clutch system takes more work to install than the cable-operated clutch system. The SVX front half-shafts fit into all of the 5-speed trannys. The driveshaft will need to be lengthened by 2", or a late-'90's Legacy driveshaft can be used with some minor mods to the output shaft cone at the back of the tranny.

A 97 with a dud trans.

Hi Kay, It is unusual for a 97 auto, to have terminal troubles, What happened to the auto?

You can find more on the 'European Forum', a member there is doing the same swap, in Europe.

Harvey.
