AWD not working
So it finally snowed and I got to drive my SVX for the first time in snow. Only it sucks theres no grip front end just spinns and the rear at first does nothing. I live 30 miles from where I work so on the way home I experimented the rear end would kick in with a loud thump/clunk only when I really got on it and my front wheels spun. I am driving my xt6 right now I love my fulltime four wheel drive manual. I have read many posts just like this, and I believe that it could be the clutch packs (but I dont really think thats it because they looked fine when I worked on tranny), or it could be that the solenoid c is sticking??? but every post I find says just that is there a how to on changing the solenoid C because I cant find it. Or does anyone have any idea what I should do beside driving the car off a cliff.

Some people have had success fixing an AWD binding issue by driving tight circles in a parking lot, and on that note I will refer you to this thread for more technical information I don't understand http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...id+replacement

The "C" solenoid is slow to respond. Mine would do this as well. Either the solenoid is sticking, there's a lack of pressure issue in the tranny or the clutches themselves are causing the problem.

Subaru called and said Solenoid C is working and that the clutch pack is definitely to blame. Then they called back and said the propeller shaft was also broke. I never heard a snap, and now wonder if I ever had AWD since owning the car. Seems to go through front axles a lot, could that be why? I'm probably looking at about $1200. But did I mention I have a nice loaner?! |

Slow to respond.
As Dave says, the transfer clutch is slow to act. Either the plates are very worn, or the C solenoid/transfer valve is sticking. My guess is the transfer valve. as you say "it looked ok when I worked on it".
The C solenoid/transfer valve assemble, is fitted in the rear housing, you have to disconnect the wire to remove the housing. It is supplied as a complete assemble, not too dear. Harvey. ps. I would not allow the clutch to clunk, as it can break the clutch drum off the transfer gear.

Hey thanks guys. Do I have to order the solenoid from subaru or where should I buy from and does anyone have any idea on the price. Also Dont worry I am not driving it anymore, and I only did it a couple of times. Hopefully it'll hold up, probably broke something though with the luck I've had with this car.

If I had a 4wd XT6 again I'd be parking the SVX all winter.
The only thing the SVX beats the XT6 at during winter is cold starts. However, if you have no grip at all you are pressing the gas too hard or have crappy tires. My AWD is just about bunk and spins tires all over the place but a light throttling at the green was all I needed to keep some b!$(# in a huge new Ford from cutting me off today, and to date I have never lost control 'cept for last winter when I did some rallying. You might as well order the solenoid and whatever comes with it from Subaru unless you can find it for cheap on some website or someone is parting out a low mileage SVX. Oh by the way, guys, DON'T FEED THE TROLLS.

My car does the same thing! I just don't have a clunk though. It transfers to AWD pretty smoothly but it's slow to do it. Will raising the resistance on the tranny resistor help?

Yeah and my car did the same thing soon after my tranny was rebuilt 15 months/ 9200 miles ago. It clunked on hard right turns from stops up hills. Now it doesn't clunk. Something broke.

As usual, my car feels like brand-new again after coming home
from "mama's house" (the dealer). $1650 should make things better. New clutch assembly, prop (?) as well as the second and final 02 sensor...clearing the CE light. It's snowing pretty good today so I'll make sure they fixed it! |
