I like that site because it shows that my instinct that american cars are less safe than Europian and Japanese cars isn't unfounded- heres what I did, on the right you can sellect what car company you will look at. I selected several companies from each country and noticed a lot more black and red on the american cars. Granted many of those cars were older, but I don't drive new cars, so it'll be another 5 - 10 years before it matters that the americans have improved safty. Not that they can borrow the other guys knowhow

Are you crazy?! There is just as much non-green on those charts for the imports as there are for American cars...even Ford and Chrysler included. Need a new monitor?

Non green? Blue is the best, and I was only looking at red and black, margional or poor.

Volvo, 0

BMW, 10

Mercedis, 5

Chevrolet, 57

Ford, 61

Subaru, 17

Would you like a calculator? Those are blocks rated margional or poor, anything less than acceptable. I randomly clicked companies, I didn't look at everything and pick what I wanted, but I don't feel like counting them all. If you have the time please count all the blue, green, yellow, red, and black squares separatly and prove me wrong, but intial numbers lean toward the american cars being less safe.

EDIT: When I refered to europian and japanese cars it was in refrence to the makes I mentioned before, specifically BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, Subaru, and Toyota. After looking at toyota's page I will refrain from including them in that group in the future.

How come every link other than Volvo and BMW sends me to the MB chart? You forgot some details there. Certainly BMW, Volvo, MB have alot less blemishes the way you look at it...they have alot less CARS. On top of that, more than half of the Volvos weren't even tested! They also have less than half the Chevy line listed on the Chevy chart. I only used that link for Subaru because it was fairly complete. But that doesn't apply for all makes.

I thought it was safty ratings, not number of fatalities...??? and sorry I mis posted the links, it was just before dinner and I probably was only half concious. I'm looking at the big picture, complete or not, i'm looking at the ratio of red/black to the other colors.

There are way more Volvos than SVXs so SVXs must be much safer, right?

I'm talking about the ratio here. Maybe you did understand me and i'm not understanding you. For instance, say Volvo has 2 less-than-green marks and 15 Volvos were tested...that's 2/15 or 13%. Then let's say Chevy has 8 blemishes and 50 Chevy's were tested, that's 8/50 or 16%. So you could say that Chevy cars must be alot worse because they got alot more bad ratings, but it's only a very small difference in this case because there were so many more chevy's tested.

Maybe you already understood what I meant, I don't know.

I'm not sure what your point is- that cars that are rated as "acceptable" are unsafe? here is mine, a few years ago I delt with a 1969 BMW 2002 that hit a parked suburban at 35-40mph, the passanger cage was largely intact, the doors were bent, but still opened and closed easily.. I expect inexpensive import cars to be unsafe and not have a protective cage, but by the mid 90s the big 3 should have gotten the clue and made their cars safer, there is no logical reason that cars built in the last 20 years in one of the leading nations in technology should colapse the way the 2 american cars shown at the begining of this post did. These are not by any means cheap or inexpensive cars and It looks like a great way to kill your customers if you are an automaker. No car is perfect, but that is absurd, it reaks of the tobaco industry and I would like everyone to see these pictures and be aware of the aparent low importance of safty to american car makers.
