There really IS such a thing as mercy

Coming home from work tonight, I hit the off ramp, coming off I-164 onto south 41. I was slowed by a "creeping" minivan. As i slowed down for the van, a car came up on my tail and sat close on my bumper. It was rude, to say the least. He stayed there throughout the swooping loop. Once the coast was clear and we entered the highway, I punched it to get around the van. My bumper rider stayed right on my tail. I pulled into the left lane and slowed down to let him by. He slowed down and dropped in behind me. I sped up, he sped up. I slowed down, he slowed down. Hmmmm. Okay, says I, we can play this game. I decided to slowly accelerate to see what he did. He stayed on my tail. I kept accelerating -- we were coming into traffic. I did a couple of weaves through some cars. We were at about 75 at this point (speed limit 55). Finally, he got cut off by a pick up truck. But, as soon as the coast was clear, he came tearing up behind me again. I punched it, he stayed on my tail. Finally, I was approaching my turn, so, I dropped off onto the shoulder to make a left turn. As he passed me, my headlights fully illuminated the car. I noticed it was a gold colored Ford Crown Victoria . . . yeah, the kind the police drive . . . it looked like a freakin' pincushion . . . yeah, antennas EVERYWHERE . . . and, it had KSP (Kentucky State Police) tags! He either wanted a closer look at the car . . . was off duty and had Christmas shopping to do . . . had to get back to the station . . . or, was just being meriful. I prefer to think the latter, just because it's Christmas.

also helps if the cop knows you or has seen you around. i was hauling late one night in a maserati biturbo, lettting it run into triple didgets l see these headlights WAY in the distance. i notice they are not getting farther away. i slow a bit and get off at my exit. the car follows. then the red and blue lights come on. plain wrapper state cop. he says i passed him at 85 and sped up. but he recognized me from around town. he told me to get home but if he ever saw me speeding again i'de get written for every violation he culs think of. to me THAT'S a real christmas story.

Nothing like the close call. I was driving in CO a few years ago in my hopped up 88 CRX (fun little cars) and came around a blind corner only to find a cop with a radar gun who immediately pulled out and turned on the gumball machine. I figured I'd had it so I started to slow down and look for a place to pull over. Well just about then a camaro (I think it was) goes screamin by in the other direction, the cop turned right around and went after them, never saw that cop again. Lucky me...
