Something gives.....

The numbers aren't matching up. I got the below information off of subarusvx.com. These figures don't match up with several of your numbers, just at a quick glance Randy, Wayne, and Leo all have 4 digits exceeding production totals for their year. (yes I know there are foreign numbers to figure in there but some of your numbers are off by thousands) So either these figures are wrong or our VIN decoding system is wrong....

Or maybe I'm just wrong

US Sales
1992 5,280
1993 3,859
1994 1,666
1995 1,801
1996 1,111
1997 640
Total 14,257

European Sales
Germany 854
Non-German 1,624
Total Europe 2,478

Worldwide Production (approx)
Lefthand Drive 18,000
Righthand Drive 7,000
Total 25,000

Notes:
Production of the 1992 SVX started in January of 1991 and ended in June of 1991
1,513 of the 1992 SVXs were sold in 1991; the remaining 3,667 of the 1992 model were sold in 1992
Of the 3,859 SVXs produced in 1993, approximately 600 were the 25th Anniversary Limited Edition model

My VIN wouldn't necessarily exceed "Production" numbers. Don't confuse "Sales" with "Production."

VIN numbers

According to the 1992 US Service Manual:

]JF1CX343XNH100001[

JF - Maker Identifier (J[Asia] F[Fuji Heavy Industries])
1 - Passenger Car
C - Subaru C Series
X - 2-Door Coupe
3 - Engine Type 3.3 Litre
4 - Model (2[base],3[L],4[LS],5[LS-L])
3 - Weight Class & Restraint Type
X - Check Digit
N - Model Year (N=1992)
H - Transmission Type (B[5MT],G[AWD 5MT],H[AWD 4AT],K[4AT]
100001 (and after) - sequential number

I know for sure that Japanese VINs are different, the complete VIN of our Alcyone is CXD002261. "CX" means the same as above, "D" means "Version L" (top of range) as opposed to "W" meaning "Version E" (base) [why didn't they just use L & E???] and 002261 is the serial number (don't think they can reset this back to zero every year since there is no other digit to indicate year).

UK VINS are also different, I have a mechanics report on a UK SVX we were thinking of buying, the VIN is JF1CXWAR0EH002114. I don't know how to decode that, although some parts are obviously the same as above and I believe the "R" means Right Hand Drive.

Hope that is of interest.

Phil.

PS. If the owner of JF1CXWAR0EH002114 (1992 badly resprayed in pearlescent white) is reading this and wants a copy of the report, let me know. I also have a report on another Alcyone, CXW002404 (black 1992 with cool "3.3 Liter horizontally opposed quad cam 24 valve 6 cylinder boxer engine" stickers in front of rear wheel arches).

Question

OK - it's not 0002 either. It's really a '92 #8712. This makes no sense. The mfg. date says 01,(Jan)92. Can I now claim it's a '93 or at least a '92.5? I also think the worldwide production was more like 35,000 or so. I'm really confused again!
Ron.

Post VIN Number Series

I hope this will help. For serial numbers and production numbers, Subaru uses the last 6 of the VIN. The first SVX to be produced for the US market ends 100022 and it was a LS-L produced in 1/91. Make sure you take into account the Model year (N - Model Year [N=1992, P=1993, R=1994, S=1995, T-1996]) This should help a little.

92 LS-L 02300. Just average, typical, non-descript, bland, instanding (vs outstanding), plain vanilla, pale by comparison, and any other blah descriptions I can't think of at the moment.
