Removing Cat. Converter

hey guys,

The shop I took my car to today to get the heat shield re-welded to try and stop that stupid rattling sound told me that the real problem was that there was something rattling around inside the catalytic converter. I really don't want to pay $300 or so to replace the thing, and since my 92 is exempt from emmissions, should I just remove the thing?. Will this boost power?
Most of all though, I JUST WANT THAT RATTLING TO STOP!!!, ITS DRIVIN ME PLAIN CRAZY!!!

thanks. - Cb

Is it the third cat? If it is, I'd suggest replacing it with a high flow cat from MagnaFlow -- it shouldn't run more than $100. Dayle has them (MotorsportsWarehouse.com).

It's probably not the cat.

$10 says it's the center resonator. The big chamber hanging off the side of the main exhaust pipe running down the vehicle is a resonator, not a cat.

Cut it out and have them weld in a straight piece of 2.5" pipe. It's worked perfectly for me, plus adds a little growl.

I looked at the diagram on subaruparts.com, and it said that the part is the " rear converter". When I crawled under the car and banged against it, something inside it rattled around, so I'm guessing that is what it is. I couldn't find that "high-flow cat." on motorsport though...

Is the part a collector, with two input flanges and one output flange? If so, that's the cat.

yep, it's that center piece, where the two pipes come together.

Re: Removing Cat. Converter

It'll boost horsepower, but if you get a high flow cat, it'll keep your car environmentally friendly as well... (even if your state doesn't require emissions testing)

I am probably going to do this eventually, but being as I don't have a lot of money right now.....it'll have to wait a while. How will taking off the cat affect my gas mileage though?, to be honest, i hardly know anything about exhaust systems.

(p.s.), Chike, I was in Charlottesville last week, looked everywhere I could for your car, but never saw ya...

Re: Re: Re: Removing Cat. Converter

Shoulda PM'd me! Last I checked, I don't bite!

Removing the cat won't affect your gas mileage, but if your '92 has an O2 sensor running to the secondary cat, it'll cause a CE light to come on. If that happens, your engine will go into 'safe mode' and your hp and fuel consumption will go down.

If money is tight, you may try looking for a used one from somebody parting out an SVX. I know Harry (newsvx) has some parts for sale from his '94 SVX including an exhaust system. Maybe he'll sell you the secondary cat for cheap if he still has it lying around.

Is there anyway to bypass this?, otherwise, that high-flow cat is starting to sound good, or maybe i'll be able to find one for cheap.....I just can't STAND that dang rattling noise....ERRRR

(I forgot to PM you man, sorry bout that. We could have had our own SVX meet!, oh wait, nevermind, I left the SVX at home to let the new paint sit for a week, still looked for ya though, oh well, maybe next time)

92 does not have o2 sensor after the main cat. This is only on OBDII cars...96 and 97.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Removing Cat. Converter

Doubt you can get around it. The high flow cat will give you the most performance gain, but getting a replacement cat from a junkyard SVX or a parts car would be the cheapest. I'm sure someone could sell you one for $20 + shipping...

Hey, even if you didn't have the SVX we could have met up. Always happy to meet members on here!
