PING this!

Why do I get engine pinging from just driving (not even lugging engine) around (not even hot here yet)?

Most likely causes please (my engine runs good generally)?

THANKS for your input!

higher octane. Our motors need at least 91 but you should use 93 thats what we got in jersey. If you are using 91 try using some octance booster and see if it goes away.

I would suggest changing your fuel filter. The filters are very affordable, available at pretty much any auto store, and only take about 10 minutes to install.

This has always been the first step (in my experience) towards preventing or stopping engine ping. The car still might ping for about 50 - 100 miles after the filter change, but if it's going to stop, it'll stop very shortly thereafter.

I had occasional pinging not very long ago. Changed the fuel filter, and all was well.

BTW - I am in CA and the only high octane fuel available at the pump is 91. Only last week did I try adding octane booster. So, try the fuel filter.

In addition to those two things, run an engine decarbonizer (like RXP) through your fuel system. Carbon build up in a combustion chamber will cause all sorts of wonderful pinging due to hot spots.

PING.......PING.......PING.......

I do run octane booster frequently and it seems to still ping!

I replaced the fuel filter 1 1/2 yrs ago (~ 28,000 miles), but maybe a replacement could help? Is the filter a ping maker because of inadequate flow or what?

I have used several fuel injector and fuel system cleaners, at least one a month. I'll look for "RXP".

THANKS!

Hi, James, I reckond for this engine to ping, the fuel is too low an octain, or your knock sensors have both stopped working.

It will ping at light throttle, because the spark is advanced at light throttle, retarded at full throttle. This is different to detonation knocking. Stick some good fuel in, see if it goes.

Harvey.

I've wanted to install new knock sensors for some time (I've had them for months!), but looks like a difficult install.

Does anyone know how to install them? Don't you have to take off the intake manifold? Let me know the basic steps if you know the easiest way to change knock sensors. THANKS

DING DING DING! I believe the fuel filter is probably the culprit. The OEM Subaru ones are quite good, I haven't had great luck with some of the other brands though.
