In honour of St. Patrick's day
Paddy, the famous Irishman is driving home in his SVX after downing a few at the local pub. He turns a corner and much to his horror he sees a tree in the middle of the road. He swerves to avoid it and almost too late realizes that there is yet another tree directly in his path. He swerves again and discovers that his drive home has turned into a slalom course, causing him to veer from side to side to avoid all the trees. Moments later he hears the sound of a police siren and brings his car to a stop. The officer approaches Paddy's car and asks him what on earth he was doing. Paddy tells his story of the trees in the road when the officer stops him mid sentence and says, "Fer Feck sake, Paddy, that's yer feckin air freshener!"

Re: Re: svxistentialist..... Help...
There's also a story you always here when you are a kid that St. Patrick was great because he chased all the snakes out of Ireland. Some kind of folk hero story. I guess it is true there are no snakes anywhere in the wild in Ireland (Joe?), but of course one guy didn't magically chase them all out, it probably had more to do with continental drift before the ice ages or something.
Maybe I'm full of BS though. [/B][/QUOTE] Well, Mac, not so much BS as a misguided version of Erin history. Let me try to "straighten out your tale", heh-heh. Yes, St. Patrick was indeed credited with snake extermination, & while driving the slithery creatures into the sea, along with the lemmings I might add, he encountered along the same path one Pied Piper of Hamlin, who was similarly herding mass quantities of rodents towards the same fate. Now you can imagine the chaos ensuing with a snake & rodent meeting along the same route. Thousands of snakes devouring thousands of rodents was NOT a postcard moment for the Emerald Isle. Help was needed quickly to rid the countryside of the expanse of bloated, now sluggish serpents. Fortunately this chaotic scene took place within a stone's throw of assistance. Yes, luckily there was facility of incarceration for an unfortunate group of disease ridden dwarf Irish folks. They suffered from a slow body dissolving affliction, that was so disfiguring, that none were hired into normal occupations, thus were left to subsist mainly by stealing food & money from the general populace. However, most were caught, prosecuted & spent their lives behide bars. (Imagine Irish people behind bars. Hahahahaha). Uh....Sorry. Anyway, St. Patrick banged on the heavy doors of the prison, arousing the warden, & begged assistance from within. "If you set these poor souls free to help me clean the pristine Irish countryside of this slimy mess, I shall bequeath thee with a pot o' gold, & keg o' bitters". "Gold-schmold", said the warden, "Where's the brewski"? Thus, the entire population of leper-cons was released to assist St. Patrick drag the putrid piles of groggy reptiles to the cliffs of the sea to join the tide of lemmings. To this day, the leper-cons have remained free, & are honorably employed in Ireland's booming computer industry. They're called trolls. Ron (Having green dreams).

Green vs. orange
I was told years ago by a girl from Ireland that only the Catholic Irish wear green on St. Patrick's day and that the Protestants wear orange, in her words "in honor of some Dutchman". I'm guessing that might be William of Orange. Does anyone know if there's any truth to this rumor?

St Patrick was Welsh, son of a Roman Centurion. Because he stayed here long enough, we have adopted him as Irish. Long enough to collect two or three Social Welfare payments will do. He is supposed to have chased all snakes out of Ireland, like Bart Simpson, nobody saw him do it. As Troy says, tectonics may have played a part in all of this. Ron's story about the leper-cons and trolls is totally true, absolutely accurate, and can be backed up by paper evidence which does not rely on the internet. I was there, and I saw it all happen just like he said. The trolls have migrated to Seattle, so the island is demographically a little different these days. If you ask these trolls for a wish, they will grant it, but it's usually something completely different than what you thought you asked for. We still have snakes, but they are mostly in politics. Joe {Joking aside, we have lizards and frogs, but no varieties of snake, such a grass snakes etc like in England, exist here in the wild}

Re: Green vs. orange
Quote:
Over here, that can be a loaded question. As in gun. Yes, basically correct, the nationalist tradition takes green as the colour of choice. The Loyalists tradition who prefer to be part of Britain use orange as their traditional colour. Mostly they are Protestants, but it is unsafe to think of all Catholics as Nationalists or all Protestants as Orangemen or Loyalists. The national flag of Ireland is coloured Green, White and Orange [not Green White and Gold as sometimes described] It represents the two opposing traditions, with the white centre aspirationally representing peace between the two sides. This is taking a little while to achieve. The William of Orange bit is historically strange, as the Orange side here take him as hero. Yet there is the possibility his military campaigns may have been geared to achieve certain aims favoured by the Pope of the time. Yet latter day Orange men are fiercely Anti-Papist. Hard to figure, but is probably a product of the social polarisation needed to maintain the status quo after the Plantation of Ulster. A deep, deep subject that does not lend itself to simplistic colour analysis. Joe
