I think the break band kicks in at around 100,000 miles. Some just take longer to complete their appointed mission.

FWIW, here's what Chilton says about the brake band adjustment: "On '85 and later models, tighten adjusting screw to 18 ft-lbs, then turn it back exactly 3/4 turn. This adjusts the brake band to the factory specified setting. However, if any of the following conditions are detected, the adjusting screw can be moved 1/4 turn in either direction:

TURN 1/4 TURN CLOCKWISE IF:
-jolts when shifting from 1st to 2nd
-engine speed abruptly rises from 2nd to 3rd, or
-shift delays in kickdown from 3rd to 2nd

TURN 1/4 TURN COUNTER-CLOCKWISE IF:
-car slips from 1st to 2nd, or
-there is braking action at shift from 2nd to 3rd"

comments anyone? Beav, does this sound right? i'd still be nervous about messing with it.

Sounds suspiciously similar to my symptoms. If only I could get to that adjustment screw without special tools or removing anything. :-(

I have now done this on the SVX and it helped the 2-3 flair. I tighten it about 3/4 turn the first time and that was not quit enough. Another 1/2 turn did the trick.

I took out the starter to do this and made up a special nut, filed out the inside of a 7/16 across flats to 7MM square. The lock nut is 17 mm. It is real tight in there and I can't see dropping the exhaust to do this. I did it from the top of the engine with the starter out and it was still a real pain.

I have also done the band tigtening on my 91 Legacy.
