Question

Anyone performed one of these yet? And more importantly, did it work?

I just started to get the over-rev at the 3-4 shift and the manual mentions that it is a symptom of the band requiring adjustment.

This would be Section 3-2, page 111 of the manual for those of you reading along at home

Be EXTREMELY careful. Too much adjustment and you'll drop the screw that holds the band, inside your transmission. THAT would not be good. This is from a previous post on another SVX club. Good luck.

------------------------------------------------------------------
If the following abnormal shifting conditions are noted in a road test, the brake band must be adjusted.
1. Clearance too wide: Upshift from 1st directly to 3rd gear occurs.
2. Clearance wide:a)Engine rpm increases abruptly while upshifting from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 4th gear. b)Time lag of at least one second occurs during kickdown operation from 3rd to 2nd gear.
3. Clearance small: "Braking" sympton occurs while upshifting from 2nd to 3rd gear.
4. Clearance too small: Upshifts from 2nd to 4th gear and downshifts from 4th to 2nd gear occurs repeatedly.

I think I remember reading somewhere that it is real difficult to get at this adjusting screw.

Adjustment of the adjusting screw:
1) using a socket wrench, immobilize the end of the 10mm screw projecting on the left side of the tranny case, and loosen the nut with a double-end wrench. In the case of occurance of problems 1) and 2) mentioned previously, perform the adjustment by loosening or tightening the nut within a range of 3/4 turn from this state.

Tool No 398603610 Tool Name "Socket wrench"

DO NOT LOOSEN EXCESSIVELY; ORTHERWISE THE BAND STRUT ON THE SERVO PISTON WILL DROP OFF.

2) In the case of the occurance of problems 1 and 4 memtioned above, perform adjustment as follows: Tighten adjust screw to 9 N*m (6.5ft-lb) torque, then back off three turns.
DO NOT ADJUST THE ADJUSTING SCREW WITH AN EXCESSIVELY LARGE TORQUE.
3) With the adjusting screw immobilized, tighten the lock nut to 25-28 N*m (18-21 ft-lb)torque.

Well that is what it says. There is a figure showing the 10mm adjusting screw, lock nut, washer and o-ring. O-ring seals the screw. The screw pushes against a lip on the band.

Another figure shows the 10mm adjusting screw to be a square head.

Does your trans really need this adjustment?
Did you have it rebuild recently?

Thank you for sufficiently scaring the crap out of me

I've been having an "uneven" ride in my SVX for a while. I was going to try the brake band because I'm getting a little bit of problem 2a but now I'm not so sure I wanna mess with it myself "just to see if it helps". Last time I took it to the dealer they said my problem was most likely the drive shaft but they "didn't have time to check it out" and they want me to bring it back (which I haven't been able to do yet).

Didn't mean to frighten. Just wanted you to be armed with the correct information. Err on the side of caution, I always say.

I definitely appreciate the info. I tend to be one of those people who play with things that may be better left alone ("if it ain't broke, don't fix it...")

I'll probably get someone to look at the SVX for the other problems I'm having and maybe mention the brake band to them and see what they think.

You know Aredub, I've had to rely on "corrective lenses" since the 6th grade!

I'm reviving this brake band thread because of all the 1-2 shift reving problems people seem to be having.... and Randy's birthday. It's been quite a year.

According to my local Subaru dealer, there is not a break band in my tranny.

He must be right as he is a professional.
