Read Diff Finished!!!

I just picked up the rear differential today. It is now a 4.11 LSD.

After he opened up the case, I brought all the parts home and powdercoated them in an array of coatings from clear to black and many colors in between.

I will be installing it this afternoon.

Now make sure you don't show it off by turning the car upside down!!! I would have to say you have the best looking differential that I have seen. Good job!

Wow. Looks pretty snazzy. One thing though.... is it just me (born on musclecars remember) or does it look really tiny. :\ I mean, you did a great job making it look nice, but now that it's so clean and err... YELLOW.... I notice how small it is. Weird. Good luck putting it in!

That's the same thing that the guy who built it said. He's used to dragsters and pro street cars, so it looked tiny to him as well. I photocopied all the pages from the shop manuals and when he read over how it worked and the way it uses the bearings, he was impressed.

I also have to keep the Excursion away from him, he was eying up the V10 for a mustang he is working on.

Talking Nice rearend Doug!

Nice job on the rear diff.

Yes, SVX does use a viscous limited slip. It's offers a rather weak limited slip function when new and with miles, the performance degrades.

The nomenclature Subaru (as well as Nissan which also uses this rear diff and Hitachi-the maker) use denotes the ring gear diameter. In our case, it is an R160 which means a 160mm (6.29") ring gear. Nissan used this rear diff in their 510 series cars, its an old design.

In contrast to muscle car designs, it's puny. Ford's 9"(ring gear) rear end is pretty tough. My new truck uses an 11.5" ring gear!

Todd

Man, this car sure is a clusterfark of parts. We have a transmission from the mazda MPV minivan, calipers from a nissan pathfinder, a rear end from a mega old school Datson 510, jeez. What next.

Nice job on the rear, Doug! And I love the gauges. Can't wait to see the finished product at next years Reading meet if not before then.

HA!!

Its more like whatever colors I had left over from powdercoating calipers.

I just finished pressing the new bushings in the upper diff support. That is number 5 on this diagram for those following along at home. http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...ategory=201-A1

Man those are a b1tch to get out. I ended up putting an air hammer on the race driver to get the old ones to budge. That was after I soaked them for a week with PB blaster and cleaned off the joints with a wire wheel. The new ones went in like a charm, thanks to a 10 ton press.

Tomorrow I will change the diff busings in the car #41326A on http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...ategory=415A-1

I hope that goes a little easier, but I know it wont

Doug
