Significant Technical Input
Re: Rough Shift from 1st to 2nd @ Lower RPM

Chris,

Flaring is bad. Flaring indicates whichever clutch pack or band is being engaged is slipping instead of engaging smoothly and quickly. Slipping produces wear. Wear leads to a broken transmission.

When all your shifts are smooth and fast but some of them are harsh that's when it's time to go checking resistors. The resistor is used by the transmission control unit to moderate line pressure during shifts. If it fails shifts become harsher.

When you have flaring it's time to look for a low fluid level or poor fluid quality and make sure you don't have a clogged in line atf filter or clogged screen in the in radiator atf cooler. Then you have a line pressure test performed to determine if your transmission is maintaining enough line pressure to properly engage the clutch packs.
