Yes, the MAF is in the orinal location - and the turbo is sucking thru it.

AFR around 12 under boost.

Ans yes, it appears the engine has to come out.

Re: The "Toy"

For EdWindows and others who may be interested in a simple entry level turbo set up....

I have forgotten to dig out the turbo details, but here's a photo which clearly shows the basic location.

Off and on I've been thinking about upgrading the turbo a bit.... to a twin scroll ball bearing unit... to shoot for a tad over 300 hp.... but still keep the original CR. This would include redoing the "up-pipes" - from the stock manifolds to the turbo. Would be a nice project.

The current unit is cooled only with oil flow and there's no intercooling..... further, I'm running with stage 2 chip from Mike.... would certainly start by swapping over to an open engine management and learn the ropes with current turbo before doing anything else.

At this point I struggle to find time for many more pressing things (than this) so nothing will happen quickly.

The kids just got their first (motor)bikes and I bought a new one for myself too.... so next summer we'll all go RIDING :-).

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

With your current setup what WHP are you making? And how is is Fuel economy?

Also, from the picture im able to make out that it is a Garret, internal wastegate turbo.

Are your Up pipes 2.5" and Downpipe 3"?

Re: The "Toy"

I suspect the Power is increased maybe 25%. 5psi boost.

Fuel economy is same as stock. 11 litres / 100km urban, 9 highway.

Uppipes maybe 2" or even less. The turbo is a T3/T4 hybrid. The conversion was done in 2000 - 15 years ago.

I know I have a photo of the id plate on the turbo, but I can not find it.

The original bill of sale from February 2000 says "Garret 3/4 0,82/54B".

Re: The "Toy"

Up pipes are 2" to the y-joint. 2,5" from there to the turbo. Dp 2,5".

No room for much larger.

That's good enough for me. Basically you have a Garret T3/T4 with a .82 compressor (cold side) and .54 B housing for the turbine (hot side/exhaust).

I'm very surprised that the turbine housing is that small. Are you hitting peak boost at around 4800 RPM? What is your peak boost... 6 PSI?

On the other hand this would explain why you have so much fun driving it!

Nates car(used to be Phil's turbo car)has 2.5" up pipes and a 3" downpipe if my notes are correct. Phil did note that it was a tight fit.

However, after looking at comparing pictures I noticed that your car still has the A/C installed and working... correct?
Nates car had the A/C line removed, so I'm guessing that extra 1/2" is the deciding factor on keeping the A/C or not (well in its original configuration)

Re: The "Toy"

I get max boost under stall speed revs .

The whole point was to build it so you can't even tell it's blown.

And yes, the turbine is very small just because of that.

In fourth and the TC locked you can get full boost by feathering the throttle under 2k w/o releasing the tc clutch

Boost is set up @ 5psi.

Is stall speed around 2500 RPM?

Re: The "Toy"

Yeah, 2700 with the stock JDM 1996 converter. It wa a tad over 3000 with the Outback 4.444 tc I had before. I have thought about a custom built TC with a stall speed of 2300 ... It would complement my set up rather nicely, I think.

More torque increases the stall speed too.
