A/c vent issue

I have a problem with my climate control, everything works fine except I can't
Get any airflow to come out of my vents ( dash vents ) it switches fine between floor and defrost and auto temp function works fine.
I'm going out later today to check for codes but was wondering if anyone else
Has run into this.
Thanks.

Re: A/c vent issue

There are a couple of linkage things on the unit under the dash and one of them could possibly even become loose/sticking. maybe try to "stand on your head" and try to see what is happening as you try different settings?

Good luck,
Keith

Re: A/c vent issue

The doors are controlled by sliding arms which are held together at their pivot points my machine screws.

I had one of these screws unscrew itself and fall out. I found it under the floor mat. I looked under the dash and could see the hole where the screw was, that connected the two arms. One lever would move, but the other was not connected to it. Replaced the screw, added a bit of LocTite and all was normal again.

Hope your fix is as simple.

Also look at THIS THREAD for diagnostic procedure (post 4) and photo (post 6)

Re: A/c vent issue

I had an airflow actuator motor fail with a result pretty much the opposite: Nothing out the floor vents nor defrost. (Don't remember if any there was any output from the dash vents.) Don't much about such workings, but the offending actuator in this instance was outside the airbox on the passenger side, high on the tranny hump. You might start by modulating the heat/AC control and observing this thing for a full range of movement. (Could be there's another actuator that controls the dash vents.) I was able to troubleshoot with help from this forum; if you haven't, you might search for more detailed info.

Re: A/c vent issue

I have a dead mix motor on mine. The one on the drivers side. I don't believe it is possible to replace it without removing the dash.

Re: A/c vent issue

I had the airflow actuator fail, drivers side by the gas pedal. Fortunately, just crud in the tracks jamming the sliding arms. A good cleaning and WD40 and all was well.
Also had an air mix door motor failure. The nylon gear operating the two wire activator arms wore out. The motor still worked. My son replaced the motor unit, located under the passenger's side dash by the transmission tunnel, without any dash removal. Hard to see but just two 13mm nuts, an electrical plug and slipping the hooked wire arms back into the nylon cam (not sure what the actual term is) on the motor. A mirror works great in planning your method of attack.
Threads on this forum made both jobs a lot easier, and actually provided the confidence to even attempt a fix.

Re: A/c vent issue

Wow, great response and quick too.
I'll take a look at all the things suggested and post what I find.
Will most likely be a couple of days though, lots to do this weekend.
I have some other things to ask about as well.
Much appreciated, Thanks!

Tierod.

Re: A/c vent issue

Ok, found it. Drivers side uppermost lever has a channel where the lever pin runs. When operating vent control from defrost to vent it hangs up right at the point it's about to open vent door. I had to to remove lower dash panel and door vent motor to get enough room to see lever. I made up a piece of foam on a small stiff piece of wire and soaked it in brake cleaner to clean channel. Oh, and channel is on the back side of lever and very hard to clean.
There was a lot of grit packed in there. So I lubed and reassembled but it still hung up at the same point. I think from all the years of sitting in the same spot it had worn a divot in the channel. I notice that by holding down slightly on the arm as I cycled the vent it would work. To difficult to mount a light spring as the arm sweeps too far so I tried adding a little weight, still no good but better.
Then I noticed a return spring mounted on the pivot shaft of the lever, removed it and now it works okay. (it's not fun to remove, I used a pick tool to hook under spring, pop it up then grab with needle nose pliers and pull)

Re: A/c vent issue

(continued)
This isn't a fun job to do and is even worse when your 6'4 and older (me).
But it is doable without removing heater box.
Again, thanks for your previous posts
I have a few more things to ask but I will repost.
Cheers

Good luck,

the "Stand on your head part" brought back some bad memories to me when I first read your post... 6'4 and probably 74 back then

Been there... No easy way...

Major uncomfortable... no way was easy.

Would love to have a "how to" video of someone trying it!
