Question Bad lifter

I was wondering how can u tell which lifter/bucket is bad? Is there a test or something.
I blew my engine by driving it on old oil... Yes I know what a retard!!!!... So I got another block and put my old heads back on as no valves nor the head was damaged... So I thought... I put the engine altogether then started it and theres a loud and fast tick tick tick sounds like a lifter... The engine runs smooth so I know its not the piston hitting the head.. doubt it is a broken spring. So was just wondering if there was a way to tell which on went bad.

Thanks izack

It could be full of gunk. Have you driven the new engine much?

Re: Bad lifter

When you did you heads, did you remember to insert a screw into the cam gear to lock the lash spring in place when you pulled the camshafts? If you didnt, then you will have a nasty sounding tick from the camshaft slapping around abit caused by the odd lobe configuration. It will not cause any short term damage, but you will have to pull out the camshaft again, reset the spring and re-install. Yeah... Ask me how I found this out.

Re: Bad lifter

are you sure its coming from inside the engine ...
one of my exhuast manifolds is leaking 1 or 2 cylinders and sounds almost like piston slap haha

Re: Bad lifter

Pull the valve cover on the side you hear it on. Check all lifters that are on the base circle for spring as you push on them with your finger. Rotate the engine as you go and check all lifters as they are on the base circle

Re: Bad lifter

Yes base circle is when the cam is not pushing on the lifter.

You would have a miss if the spring or valve were broken. The bad lifter(s) will have play while good ones should be pretty firm against the cam
