Rebuilt tranmission - third gear issues..
Hi all my SVX friends!
May I ask a question? I have just had my transmission rebuilt. VTD 4EAT Australian delivered SVX 1992. First, second and fourth are fine, but third is behaving strangely. It does not seem to fully 'lock' into third....The other gears including 4th all offer immediate response to throttle input, but 3rd 'feels' like its slipping, although a check of the gearbox oil tells me and the transmission specialist that it is not burning oil or destroying itself. I just installed Harvey's 'QUICK CHANGE' unit today also. It certainly has improved throttle response as well as making the shift from 1st to 2nd "orgasmic". But third is still weird. The transmission specialist that rebuilt the box has offered to take it back out and check inside. He doesn't seem to think it is electronic, as the QC kit has firmed everything else up. Any ideas? The transmission guy, Barry, said he may be able to increase oil pressure to 3rd gear. Again, both him and I are seeking opinions for SVX VTD 4EAT gurus!!! Thanking you in advance, Mike

Re: Rebuilt tranmission - third gear issues..
Well, if ever there were a question for Harvey, this is the time.
I am under the impression that the middle 1/3rd of the trans are pretty much the same between the ACT-4 (US type) and VTD types of trans. (The front diff being a different ratio, and the tailhousing being different between the two different types of AWD). So, what info you find about the US trans might well be perfectly applicable to yours.

It does seem like the High clutch apply pressure is slow to build, may be too much flow through from a leak in the clutch piston or in the accumulator, so that it takes longer to build apply pressure. It does build to full pressure as it holds 4th gear OK. Opening the hole in the plate could help, but there must be some other problem that is slowing the pressure rise, and I think I would have a good look, before doing the drill way. Glad you like the QC, I do too. Harvey.
