Perhaps the axle nut was not staked properly and has become loose. The torque spec is 123 -152 foot/pounds. Note YT torques his to 123, and I go to 152. He to reduce wear on the bearings, and I to make sure that it is tight enough. Both are correct.

If the wrench that you use is 18" long, and you weigh 100 pounds, then you are good!

Re: oh no! (front) wheel bearing woes!
That's foot stands! You need to jump on it, or stomp to give it foot pounds! Stop using the incorrect procedure.

Re: oh no! (front) wheel bearing woes!
I've done it both ways on Subarus-- swapping out the front spindle/hub assemblies with good used units is definitely the faster, easier way to go. Getting the hub off the spindle, removing the existing bearing, and pressing in a new one (without ruining it-- done that!) can, and probably will be a pain in the neck to do yourself.
When the front wheel bearing on my beater '97 GT wagon started to go a year or so ago, I cheaped out and got a used hub/spindle assembly from the local pick & pull yard and threw it on. As a bonus I got an extra ABS tone wheel and wheel studs too (lug nuts tend to cross-thread on Legacys for some reason.) As mentioned, the hardest part of doing it that way is removing the ABS sensor intact. In that case, PB blaster or some other penetrating oil is your friend! |
