Speedo Gear Replacement In-Car?

A few people here have hinted around that it is possible to replace the speedo drive gear without dropping the tranny. Can anyone provide details on how to do it? Thanks.

If the speedo sensor 'drive' is not turning, Separate the front dif. from the trans. to fix it. In car replacement would be a God send.

When i did the replacement on the legacy turbo (same 4eat) we did it with the trans still in the car, by pulling out the side axle, then marking and then unthrreading the retainer for the bearing cap, and put new seals in when putting back together. I assume this can be done same way with it still in the car, accessing from underneath while the car is hoisted.
dang that job sucked, but this should be the same.

This is the first time I have heard of it being done. I have yet to see if it was accomplished.
