gc question

i hope i posted in the right section first off, because its a suspension question, but its still technical q&a, so i apologize if im in the wrong section!

anyhow, so im curious as to why you cant use the ground control springs on stock struts. how does it destroy the strut? aside from welding, i can imagine the results there, but what does the higher spring rate do to the strut?

Re: gc question

if you looking for the gc chasis question place, i would say go to NASIOC.com or to RS25.com.
but the best i can do to tell you is it will cause premature failer on your struts. how i don't know.

Re: gc question

I'm pretty sure he meant Ground Control by "gc", and not the pre-2002 Impreza platform.

Re: gc question

I am no expert on this by any means, but I'll take a guess. OEM struts aren't built to be able to control the movement of the GC spring rates. They would have to work too hard and ineffectively which would shorten their life.

Re: gc question

^^^This. The OEM shock valving (which is also quite old and tired) can't handle the rebound speed with which the much stronger springs will extend the shock after a bump. It'll work for a while, but eventually... Not so much. Plus if you're going to an aftermarket spring you probably want the adjustable dampers to go with it.

Re: gc question

Bounce the front of your car (push down on the bumper, or open the hood and push on the rad support) and see if it settles immediately or does the waterbed thing. The car should immediately return to it's original height with no up/down bouncing on it's own. If it does continue to bounce it's an indicator that your front shocks are done.

Here's a video of what to look for (don't go as nuts as this guy). Note how long it takes the car to stop bouncing.
