AWD got towed in NYC

My dumb**** son with the too-many tickets got the hook. I'm sure they didn't disconnect anything, and they don't use flatbeds! I read up about the pumps needing lubrication etc. When the car is retrieved, what would be the symptom if the tranny has been damaged? Thx.

Re: AWD got towed in NYC

No need to look for symptoms. If the car was towed with 2 wheels off the ground, and 2 wheels on the ground, the transmission HAS been damaged.

Re: AWD got towed in NYC

not really.. Check the function of the AWD on loose gravel or sand. if it still seems to be working properly with the rear wheels catching in good time and smoothly then you are off the hook

It's becoming more and more clear that I know nothing about these cars anymore.

Re: AWD got towed in NYC

city tows are never more than a couple miles. The residual oil in the trans is more often than not sufficient to lube the clutches for the short distance esp. at low speeds

Re: AWD got towed in NYC

the question of the minute is this: he's going to drive the car from the impound to another location - about 3 miles. If there's no obvious noises or slipage during that drive, do you think it can make a 60 mi trip home. If the tranny is damaged, i'm not going to get it fixed, so the only question is can it make it home or should I have it towed - I have AAA plus, so it's @no cost except for the hassle.

Re: AWD got towed in NYC

drive it. If anything is damaged it would only be the transfer clutches... they are not the primary drive of the transmission so it will still drive OK as long as the fluid is changed soon.

Re: AWD got towed in NYC

Would putting in the FWD fuse allow him to carefully drive the car home as an alternative to towing?

Maybe at least put the FWD fuse in for the short drive.

Re: AWD got towed in NYC

My solenoid C is defective and I have been driving it around with the FWD fuse in place for a while now. I have noticed no problems, but i was not very worried about it since the build I am currently doing was already being planned when I put the FWD fuse in. HOWEVER, I have not driven the car with the fuse removed since, so I am not sure if it has caused something that would only be noticable with power to the back wheels

Re: AWD got towed in NYC

My son asked the NYPD impound people when he picked up the car and they told him that they use a dolly for AWD vehicles. Don't know if I believe them or not, but he drove the car home and it seems normal. Lots of anxiety for awhile there though. Thanks to everyone that came through with comments so quickly.
