Suspension Clunk

So my '92 has developed a clunk that seems to only occur when I accelerate from a stop and sometimes as I am braking coming to a stop. It's always just a single clunk, not a rattle, not a thud, and sounds like it's coming from the front end. It's definitely suspension, I can feel it through the pedal when it happens.

I've been trying to figure out where this clunk is coming from without any luck. Last weekend I had both front tires off and couldn't find any loose bolts or anything obvious. The front calipers do wiggle slightly but I can't see those being the culprit given the nature of this particular clunk.

Given the fact that I have polyurethane sway bar bushings, replaced the ball joints and strut mounts <1yr ago where should I direct my attention?

Probably your transmission mount.

Re: Suspension Clunk

I think I may have the same problem...shop quoted me $84 labor and $130 parts ("Right motor/transaxle mount"). Does that sound about right?

I also have a separate rattle/slop sound from the suspension when hitting any kind of bump, it's getting louder lately...shop thought that was "front sway links", $135 parts/labor.....comments?

Re: Suspension Clunk

Hmm...so perhaps I'll have them do just the trans. mount and see what happens.

Re: Suspension Clunk

I had YT fill mine with 80a urethane to stiffen it up and prevent a reoccurance of the same issue

Re: Suspension Clunk

Ok, I'll have to take a look at the transmission mount. I would be surprised if that was the cause since it too has been replaced when I recently put in a new solenoid c due to awd issues.

I think having someone drive the car to induce the clunk while I stand and listen might help greatly in determining where it's coming from. After reading a bit, my tierod ends could be shot causing it to happen. I guess I'll have to get one wheel up and shake the heck out of it to see.
