Question Tranny Prevention

I just purchased a 92 SVX LSL with 98k on it, Got a great deal for 3k. I am aware of the major problems. Mainly the tranny. I just had an aftermarket tranny cooler put in and the car shows no signs of tranny wear. What other preventative measures can i use to try and keep this tranny in good working order. I go to school about an hour away and fear that i would not be able to afford a rebuild or new tranny if this one goes.

Re: Tranny Prevention

Change the tranny fluid and flush the radiator often (every 15k miles or 1 year) - both are very inexpensive and easy to do yourself.

If you are driving around town, put the car into "3" instead of "D" which keeps it out of overdrive and minimize the number of gear changes which reduces heat.

There has been lots of discussion on the forum about shift kits (QC and small car) which may harden up your shifts and reduce heating caused by shifting. I'll leave you to read about this as there are many threads on the subject.

Re: Tranny Prevention

You can also install a transmission filter if there is not one on it now. That will help keep the radiator screen from clogging.

One other thing you can check is the transmission pan screen. I have seen some of these clogged and it reduces the flow of fluid to the cooler and filter. It is not a very expensive thing to do either, and is worth the effort. The screen is about $35. Good luck.
