Headunit Removal

Just got a 92 SVX last week, so I know nothing about these cars. My car has an Alpine faceplate that has the option to hook up my ipod to it. I tinkered around the dash trying to get an idea of how I could get the headunit out, but no luck. If this info is located on this site please direct me to it.

SVX head unit remove/install procedure

The procedure is actually not that difficult. You just need to work carefully to prevent scratching up the dash pieces.

Probably the most difficult part is sliding the radio and cage back into the dash, since the wires tend to try to block the way.

Correct link is: http://www.geocities.com/svxdc/AudioInstall.htm

(URLs on Geocities are case-dependent, unfortunately. The link that subarufamily posted goes to a page that redirects to the correct one).

I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Added: Oh, and congratulations on your "new" SVX, and welcome to the site!

You can find a wealth of useful info in the "How-To Documents" section. See the link at the top of every page here.

You can find many other topics and FAQs (which haven't been written up into a How-To doc yet) by searching the forums.

I agree...so many wires, so little space when you try to push everything back....I cut up the tops of my hands and wrists tinkering with mine a year ago.
I basically hope I never have to remove it again.

Good luck

Don't know how aftermarket hardware might change things up, but I've replaced the SVX CD player with another stock unit and found the procedure a bit tedious (for an impatient, all thumbs mechanic such as myself) but not difficult in the least. Just take your time.

i am glad svxdc gave you the right link his site for installation instructions were perfect as for radio fit go to crutchfield.com they will have radios that fit the H * W * D for proper fit on the other hand svxdc has the best wiring adaptor for this special car. it took me the better part of a morning to install a DDin radio in the spot but most of the time was spent in putting it back in as thats the tricky part follow the directions they work.

PS welcome to the site and congrats on the purchase

I have some pics showing how to pull the wires down to the ashtray area to get them out of the way. Figured this out after spending too much time trying to do like the how-to said. I can't put them in my locker because i have to pay the site to do that, but i could prob email them.

If you upload images to any of the image-hosting sites (such as imageshack.us/) you can post them here.

They even provide a "Forums" link you can copy and paste into your post to display a thumbnail that is also a link to the full-sized picture. Like this:
on ImageShack, it's the "Thumbnail for forums (1)" link.

Yes, Crutchfield is a great source for detailed information on car stereos. However, the spec they have for the maximum depth in the SVX may be just a bit too strict — I actually installed a radio that they said would not fit.

Or if you don't feel like dealing with imageshack try simplepic.net, something i created for personal use, few friends and network members use as well. You can get thumbnail images, mid size images, as well as full size images, plus gallery view. Also hotlinking and video/audio. I hate imageshack so much...
