Bad Tranny... replace or sell?

OK... not sure what to do.
I just blew the trans on my 95 LS/L daily driver. It's either replace it or get rid of it whole.
I'd love to keep it, but I've gotten 3 quotes in the $6300-$6500 range...
$5700 for a new one? sounds steep.
Only 85K mi (I put 40K in the 2.5 years I had it), so I'm really really disappointed, but I've never paid more for a repair than I paid for a car.
Does that repair cost seem reasonable? Shocked me...
If I get it repaired, i gotta find a cheaper place. I was willing to go over $4000, but 6300?!?
Very sad.
I'm in the NH seacoast area if anyone is interested....

That seems high. Three years ago I paid $3500 to get a Subaru Rebuilt installed in. With the warranty.

There are options for either a Legacy/Impreza auto or 5 speed, where the used parts can be had for less than $1000.

6300 is ridiculous, i got mine replaced (subaru rebuild) for $1300 with a year warranty (which i used 11 months and 3 weeks later when the clutch went out) Are you looking for a chain shop or an individually owned shop? When i had mine done the first time i called everywhere in town and found individually owned shops were cheaper and had more experience with the SVX than chain shops.
