Phillies are very close to aquiring Barry Zito...will keep you posted.

God almighty...Ed wade screwed this team over with those ridiculous contracts. Pat Gillick is going to have to try and try hard to get rid of them all.

Peter Gammons ripped the phillies saying that they were the biggest losers in the winter meetings because they didn't make a move and they lost wagner.

hey newsflash you moron...wagner wanted the most money...and the mets and yankees and red sox are the only teams able to spend any amount of cash on anything. The rest of the damn league works on a very tight budget. Wagner can talk all this bull**** about how he wanted to go to the best team....but everyone knows its all about the money. I'm glad his big mouth is out of philly. The first time he blows a save and mets fans boo him, he will rip the fans and the city just like he did with philadelphia.

The phillies made alot of trade proposals.....just that we weren't going to get anything good in return so our GM said no deal. Ed wade would have traded bobby abreu for a 38 year old reliever and a backup infielder. We now have brains in the front office. Were trying to build a team for many years...not just a one and done thing. Peter Gammons is a joke..stupid mushmouth.

Lets take a look at the mets vs phillies currently

After all the talk of how great the mets are from everyone else, I just wanted to look at how these two teams stand right now:

TOP FOUR SLUGGERS:

Mets -- Carlos Delgado, Cliff Floyd, David Wright, Carlos Beltran
Phillies -- Pat Burrell, Bobby Abreu, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley

EDGE: I'd lean toward the Phillies, unless Beltran returns to 2004 form

-----------------------------

OTHER FOUR EVERYDAY PLAYERS:

Mets -- Paul LoDuca, Kaz Matsui, Jose Reyes, Xavier Nady
Phillies -- Mike Lieberthal, Jimmy Rollins, David Bell, Aaron Rowand

EDGE: I think you have to say Phillies, by a good bit

------------------------------

ROTATION

Mets -- Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine, Kris Benson, Steve Trachsel, Jae-Weong Seo/Victor Zambrano
Phillies -- Brett Myers, Jon Lieber, Cory Lidle, Vicente Padilla, Ryan Madson/Robinson Tejeda

EDGE: Slight edge to Mets at the moment. Both rotations clearly have big questions. Both teams sure to make at least one big addition, which will be crucial to whether either team can separate from the NL East pack

-------------------------------

BULLPEN

Mets-- Billy Wagner, Aaron Heilman, Juan Padilla, Heath Bell
Phillies -- Tom Gordon, Aaron Fultz, Rheal Cormier, Geoff Geary, Julio Santana

EDGE: Again, two works in progress here. ... At this moment, I'd give the edge to the Mets. ... But the eventual winner in this area will be determined by which team lands the better setup men.

--------------------------------

In summary, for all the talk up in Shea, at this moment in time, it's really hard to say the Mets have a better team than the Phillies yet.

The rest of the winter will decide the NL East. It's still ours to grab.

Power on D (Tom)

You are wrong. The winter decides nothing, but media/fan hype.
Playing the games, during the season, decides everything.
Just look at the Yankee pitching staff last year. On paper, during the winter of 2004-2005 they were unbeatable. During the season, they did not produce.
Look at the Cardinals. On paper they should be World Series champs 2 years in a row.

I rest my case.

LOL well obviously without the games you are nothing. The yankees are a different story.....when you spend spend spend...you develop no team chemistry...not to mention those guys couldnt handle NY. The winter is hype but decides who your putting on the field...what rotation you have and the spring will decide your line up.
