Brake band adjustment - on a Legacy trans?
Okay, my 4.444 trans and matching rear diff from a '97 legacy Outback have been purchased and will be dropped off at Tom's place this week. I would like to do a correct brake band adjustment while the trans is out of the car, and wanted to know if anyone with a Chilton's repair manual can tell me the correct setting for the adjuster knob at the top.
After tightening the knob all the way it'll go, the correct setting for the SVX is 3 complete turns back - while the Impreza is 2 turns back. What's the setting for the Legacy? Thanks! -Chike

Everything I find on nasioc says it is 2 turns for a legacy - but I have only found opinions so far - no scans of a service manual or anything. Maybe they'll know over at USMB.

Long....
The ATSG, which is generic for the 4EAT, says back off two turns.
The Haynes manual for the Legacy [I have 2 Legacies, 2 SVXs] says back off 3 turns, and it deals with 1990 to 1998. Different problems arise from having the band a little loose, a little tight, or a lot loose or a lot tight. This is a transcription from Haynes mostly: 1. Road test the vehicle and note the following: a) If the transaxle upshifts directly from 1st to 3rd, the band clearance is too big. Tighten the adjusting screw. b) If engine rpm increases abruptly when the transaxle shifts up from 1st to 2nd or from 3rd to 4th gear, or if there's more than a one-second delay when the transaxle is downshifted from 3rd to 2nd, the band clearance is slightly too big. Tighten the band adjusting screw. c) If you notice a braking effect when the transaxle upshifts from 2nd to 3rd, the band clearance is slightly too small. Loosen the adjustment screw slightly. d) If the transaxle repeatedly upshifts from 2nd to 4th, and downshifts from 4th to 2nd, the band clearance is too small. Loosen the band adjusting screw. 2. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. 3. To adjust the band, locate the band adjusting screw to the left side of the transaxle, hold the end of the screw with a wrench and loosen the locknut with another wrench. Proceed to step 4 or 5 as indicated. 4. If one of the problems in step 1 b) or 1 c) occurred, tighten or loosen the adjusting screw as indicated, in slight increments, retesting after each adjustment. Do NOT exceed 3/4 turn in total. Do NOT loosen the adjusting screw excessively, or the band strut on the servo piston will fall off. 5. If one of the problems described in step 1 a) or 1 d) occurred, tighten the adjusting screw to 78 in lbs, then back off three turns. Hold the adjusting screw with a wrench and tighten the locknut to specification [26 +/- 2 N.m] 6. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle. Road test the vehicle to verify that the transaxle is operating correctly. Sorry about the mix of Imperial and Metric, I got figures from two manuals for this. Take your choice about backing off two turns or three turns. Me, I would back off two and a half, then fine adjust up or down if the road test was not perfect. Joe

I'll probably go with two turns first, and see if it needs adjusting after that... -Chike

Ever consider just calling the dealer and asking? Some dealers are helpful, some petty, but it can't hoit to ask.
