Front Brake Disc Help

My "one book for all Subaru's" shop manual lacks detail - specifically the size of bolts needed to pop the disc rotor from the hub. It refers to "suitably sized metric bolts".

I went to Home Depot this morning looking for a metric bolt assortment, and after some searching couldn't find even 1 metric bolt. Anybody out there familiar with what size I'll need?

Are thread pitches and particulars other than the size of head in English units? There was a nasty rumor of that in college design classes....

If it's really wedged on there, and you don't have a bolt, just knock it loose with a rubber mallet.

Of course, mine just came off, no tools required.

I wish I could tell you...I reading all over my howto:

http://www.ryanmacdonald.com/car/howto/brake/brake.html

of course I didn't have a clue what ones I used.

I just had an old bolt bucket, and dug around in it. Seems to be they had a 10mm head, but I really haven't a clue what size threads or length they were.

Ummm....

I know this may sound bad, but I removed a bolt from each side of the radiator top mount and used those. They fit.

12mm head on it.

Significant Technical Input
Most all Japanese cars use an 8x1.25 mm bolt. Don't try to take it off with the two bolts alone though. Spray some WD40, or weapon of choice, around each lug and the rotor center. After a couple minutes rap the 'hat' portion of the rotor with a hammer a few times. Don't hit the center of the hub protruding through the rotor or the lugs. Then you can use the bolts in the rotor to help. Screw them in a reasonable distance and, if needed, rap rotor with the hammer again. If you try to do this with the bolts alone you'll usually succeed in stripping the threads from the rotor.

Good Luck,

Beav

Thanks!

I appreciate the help. I'll try to get the bolts from the machine shop guys tomorrow...

The web link helped. At least it clarified that it needed the bolts. My first foray into the rotors left me confused....given the crappy shop manual and all.....
