I can't believe no one mentioned the other Toyota sporty models - the 2nd gen MR2 (w/turbo) and the Celica All-Trac. The 2-liter Yamaha designed motor could produce 1000hp (although admittedly at the hands of TRD tuners) and the All-Trac still (I think) holds the Pike's Peak Hill Climb record. Sport Compact Mag got 500 RWHP (dyno'd) on pump gas (third gear wheelies - woo-hoo). Another car (the XT guys might appreciate it for styling) is the 1st gen MR2 - supercharged version - I've never driven anything (street-legal) that felt more like a shifter go-kart than the 1989 MR2.

Not only that, but the MR2 tranny reliably (hint to Subaru about over-building) handles 500hp (up from the 200 OEM USDM - 280 JDM - they got all the fun stuff).

My old MR2 held it's own against an Acura NSX in local AutoX - for a while SCCA rules put the MR2 in the same class as the 911 and Corvettes - although it's been moved down a class with age.

Lee,

I wanted to focus the discussion around the 'halo' model for each Japanese manufacturer in the US. Your argument for the inclusion of the MR2 Turbo and Celica All-Trac is good, but in that same light someone could also ask that the Eclipse GSX be included since DSM's can be tuned to well over 600hp on pump gas.

The Supra was the 'halo' sports car for Toyota in the 90's. The MR2 was just an inexpensive mid-engine car for the masses...which happened to be pretty darn quick in turbo form!

Phil,

I lived in Korea and Japan for 6 months back in 2001. Those wide-body TRD3000GT kits look drop dead gorgeous in person...

Most people think the name is a rip off of Mitsu's 3000GT/GTO, and no nothing about the legendary Toyota 2000GT sports car that was produced around the same time as the original Datsun 240Z.

I love JDM sports cars!

Yes, the base model of the Soarer was dressed up and turned into the Lexus SC300. However, the top dog model that never made it here has the turbo'd 2JZ engine - which Dayle at MotorSport owns...
